To make OBS advance automatically through multiple videos, add them to a VLC Video Source playlist. Keep Shuffle Playlist off for the listed order, and choose whether Loop Playlist should restart the list after its final video. A regular Media Source is for one file; its Loop option repeats that file rather than creating a multi-video playlist.
Set up a playlist that advances automatically
- Add the source: In OBS, select the scene you want, then use the add-source control in the Sources dock and choose VLC Video Source. OBS’s Sources Guide explains how to add a source. OBS Sources Guide.
- Install VLC if the source is missing: OBS requires VLC to be installed for VLC Video Source to appear. Match the architecture: for 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC. See OBS’s Media Sources documentation.
- Add the videos: Open the VLC Video Source properties and add the files to its playlist. This source supports multiple files and can advance through them automatically.
- Set the order: Leave Shuffle Playlist off to play the files in their listed order. Turn it on only if you want randomized playback.
- Choose what happens at the end: Set Loop Playlist on to restart the source after it runs out of media files; turn it off to let playback end after the final item.
OBS’s Media Sources documentation, dated January 11, 2022, describes VLC Video Source as allowing a playlist, “similar to an Image Slideshow.” If a property has a different name or is presented differently in your installed OBS release, check that source’s properties.
Choose the right source and playback behavior

Do not confuse playlist playback with source activation
The Media Source option Restart playback when source becomes active controls whether an individual file restarts when its source becomes active. It does not make a multi-file playlist. For the related case of media restarting when a scene or source is activated, OBS forum guidance discusses this Media Source option and VLC Video Source visibility behavior; those settings address activation, not the basic next-item playlist workflow. Optional folder-based alternative
PlayFolder is a third-party Lua script that describes scanning a selected folder and playing its files sequentially through a Media Source. Its resource page lists an update on September 24, 2026. It is a community extension, not the built-in OBS playlist workflow, so check its current compatibility and instructions before relying on it. PlayFolder resource page.
