To repeat one video in OBS, add it as a Media Source and enable Loop. To repeat several videos in sequence, add a VLC Video Source, put the files in its playlist, and leave Loop Playlist enabled. VLC must be installed for that source to appear; with 64-bit OBS, use 64-bit VLC.
Choose the right OBS source

Looping and visibility are separate behaviors. A file or playlist can repeat at its end, while the source’s activation or visibility settings determine what happens when you switch scenes or hide it.
Loop one video file
- In the OBS Sources dock, select + and add a Media Source to the scene.
- Open the source properties and select the local video file.
- Enable Loop. It repeats the file after playback completes; OBS documents this option as off by default.
- To have playback start from the beginning when the source becomes visible or active, keep Restart playback when source becomes active enabled. OBS documents it as on by default.
Loop a playlist of video files
- Install VLC. If the VLC source does not appear in OBS after installation, restart OBS.
- In the Sources dock, select + and add a VLC Video Source. Add the video files you want to play to its playlist.
- Leave Loop Playlist enabled. OBS documents it as on by default; it restarts the source after it has run out of media files.
- Leave Shuffle Playlist off to play files in their listed order. Turn it on to randomize playback.
- Set Visibility Behaviour according to what should happen while the source is hidden. The documented default is Stop when not visible, restart when visible; options also include continuing or pausing.
For 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC. If VLC Video Source is missing from the add-source menu, check that VLC is installed, restart OBS, and verify the bitness matches.
Use a folder or another playlist tool only if needed
PlayFolder script
If you need a folder’s contents scanned and played in sequence, the OBS-hosted PlayFolder script resource describes looping back to the first file and starting playback when the scene or source becomes active. Its instructions specify Media Source only: do not combine the script with VLC Source or OBS’s internal looping options. Follow the current resource page when configuring it.

Media Playlist Source plugin
The OBS-hosted Media Playlist Source plugin is described as an alternative to VLC Video Source, with playlist editing and shuffle features. Its resource page says releases from version 0.1.0 require OBS 31 and lists limitations. Check the latest release notes and platform/version support before installing it.
Troubleshoot playback that stops or restarts unexpectedly
- The clip stops at the end: For a single Media Source, enable Loop. For a VLC playlist, enable Loop Playlist.
- Playback restarts when you switch scenes: For a Media Source, review Restart playback when source becomes active. For VLC Video Source, review Visibility Behaviour.
- VLC Video Source is missing: Install VLC, restart OBS, and make sure VLC matches OBS’s bitness. In particular, 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC.
- You need automatic folder discovery: The built-in file and playlist settings may not meet that need. Consider the script route, but follow its instructions and check current compatibility before setup.
