For a mostly static podcast scene, start with OBS output at 720p, 30 fps, H.264, CBR, and an 8 Mbps video bitrate. YouTube lists 8 Mbps as its recommended H.264 bitrate for 720p30; 1080p30 is an option if your computer can encode it reliably and your measured upload capacity can sustain the higher bitrate with headroom. These settings help configure a stream, but they cannot guarantee uninterrupted 24/7 operation: power, the computer, software, and the home connection all matter.

Recommended OBS settings for a YouTube podcast stream

Use these as a starting point for a spoken-word podcast with a static or lightly animated scene. YouTube’s encoder figures below were checked in 2026; they are platform recommendations, not measurements of Indian home broadband or a promise of continuous service.

Setting Starting point Why it matters
Video codec H.264 YouTube’s published bitrate recommendations below are for H.264.
Resolution and frame rate 1280 × 720 at 30 fps A practical conservative starting choice for a mostly static podcast. It is editorial guidance, not a YouTube podcast preset.
Video bitrate 8 Mbps recommended by YouTube for H.264 720p30; 3 Mbps minimum listed Start at the recommended figure only if your sustained upload capacity has enough room. YouTube lists 5 Mbps minimum and 14 Mbps recommended for H.264 1080p30.
Rate control CBR Constant bitrate is the recommended mode for a stable live ingest.
Keyframe interval 2 seconds YouTube recommends two seconds and says not to exceed four seconds.
Audio AAC or MP3; stereo, 128 Kbps, 44.1 kHz YouTube supports AAC or MP3 for RTMP/RTMPS and lists 128 Kbps at 44.1 kHz in its advanced stereo recommendations.
Color for SDR Rec. 709, 8-bit Matches YouTube’s SDR guidance.
Transport RTMPS YouTube recommends encrypted transport.

Source for codec, bitrate, audio, keyframe, color, and transport figures: YouTube Help: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions, checked in 2026.

Choose 720p30 or 1080p30

Start with 720p30 for a simple podcast scene

For a talking podcast over a static image, 720p30 is often a sensible first test: the extra detail of 1080p may not help much if the image barely changes, while the lower recommended video bitrate is easier to accommodate. YouTube lists 8 Mbps as the recommended H.264 video bitrate for 720p30.

Move to 1080p30 only if the whole setup sustains it

Choose 1080p30 when the added visual detail matters and both your encoder and connection remain stable during an extended test. YouTube lists 14 Mbps as its recommended H.264 video bitrate for 1080p30. Compare the computer’s sustained encoding performance and your real upload capacity—not just a brief speed-test peak—before switching.

The 720p and 1080p figures are video bitrates. Include audio and other stream traffic when estimating total upload demand, and leave additional capacity for other household network use.

Calculate the upload capacity you need

YouTube recommends leaving 20% above the total stream bitrate. For a rough minimum planning calculation, add the audio target to the video bitrate, then allow that 20% margin. For example, an 8 Mbps video target plus 128 Kbps audio is about 8.13 Mbps total; 20% headroom puts the connection target at about 9.76 Mbps before accounting for other devices or backup traffic. This is a calculation from YouTube’s recommendations, not an India-specific broadband benchmark.

YouTube’s Streaming tips say the total stream bitrate must not exceed available upload bandwidth and recommend leaving 20% room. Measure sustained upload performance where the streaming computer will be used, ideally at the time of day you plan to go live. If the connection is shared, include normal household activity in the test.

Set up OBS and YouTube Studio

  1. Enable live streaming and create a stream. In YouTube Studio, enable live streaming for the channel if it is not already enabled, then create or schedule a stream. In the stream settings, obtain the stream key. Treat it as a password: do not share or publish it, and reset it if you think it has been exposed. See YouTube Help: Manage live stream settings.
  2. Configure the OBS video output. Set the output resolution to 1280 × 720 and frame rate to 30 fps for the initial test. In OBS output settings, choose H.264 if available, CBR, and 8,000 Kbps video bitrate. OBS labels and encoder choices vary by installed build and supported hardware; verify the actual encoder and output rather than assuming every computer presents identical options.
  3. Set the keyframe interval. Use 2 seconds. Do not set a value greater than 4 seconds for YouTube ingest.
  4. Configure audio. Use stereo unless the production genuinely needs a different channel format. Set AAC or MP3 where the OBS output path offers the choice; target 128 Kbps and 44.1 kHz for stereo in line with YouTube’s advanced recommendations.
  5. Set SDR color and transport. For SDR, use Rec. 709 and 8-bit. Prefer RTMPS for the stream connection when configuring the YouTube service/server in OBS.
  6. Connect OBS to the stream. Select YouTube as the service and enter or select the correct server and stream key. Keep the key private. If it is compromised, reset it in YouTube Studio and update OBS.
  7. Start a private or unlisted test and inspect it in YouTube Studio. Use the same microphone, scene, motion, and network conditions you expect for the live podcast. Check the Live Control Room preview and stream health before relying on the setup. YouTube explicitly advises testing before starting a live stream.
  8. Verify playback from a viewer’s perspective. Open the live page on the channel and check it on a mobile device. Listen for clean audio and watch for buffering, dropped frames, or stream-health warnings while the test runs.

For the encoder test and preview, see YouTube Help: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder. YouTube’s YouTube live streaming tips – Computer also advises monitoring the stream.

Plan for long sessions and continuous operation

Test longer than a quick preview

A short test can confirm that OBS connects, but it does not establish that the computer, network, or power will remain stable for an extended run. Run a longer monitored trial with the intended scenes and audio, and confirm that the computer does not overheat, sleep, restart for updates, or lose network access. The sources establish no universal computer specification, India-specific ISP speed, or electrical backup requirement, so assess those against your own machine and location.

Choose latency and DVR for the podcast format

If the program is not interactive, ultra-low latency is usually not a priority. YouTube notes that lower latency can increase playback buffering. DVR lets viewers pause, rewind, and resume, which may be useful for a long podcast stream; choose the live-stream latency and DVR options in YouTube Studio based on how viewers will use the program. See YouTube Help: Manage live stream settings.

Check rights and live-stream policies before looping episodes

Only stream audio, video, artwork, and other material you own or are authorized to use. A continuous loop does not change the underlying rights in a podcast episode, music bed, guest recording, or visual. Review YouTube’s applicable copyright and live-stream rules in YouTube Studio before scheduling a long-running broadcast; OBS settings cannot resolve a rights claim or policy issue.

Troubleshoot common OBS podcast-stream problems

  • YouTube reports an unstable connection or the stream buffers: Compare the total video and audio bitrate with sustained upload capacity. Reduce the video bitrate or move from 1080p30 to 720p30, then retest; also account for other devices using the connection.
  • OBS connects but YouTube does not show the expected stream: Check that OBS is using the stream key for the correct YouTube Studio event. If the key was reset, update OBS with the new key.
  • The stream starts but video quality or motion breaks down: Confirm output resolution and frame rate, then check encoder load during the test. Lowering resolution or bitrate may help if the computer or connection cannot sustain the chosen configuration.
  • Audio is missing, too quiet, or distorted: Verify the intended microphone is active in the OBS scene, check its level and monitoring, and listen to the YouTube preview on another device. Confirm the output is stereo and uses a supported audio format.
  • The stream drops during a long run: Check the computer’s power and sleep settings, network stability, OBS status, and YouTube stream health. Settings alone do not prevent interruptions from local power, software, hardware, or ISP conditions.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is a YouTube channel that keeps a prerecorded podcast live without leaving a home computer on, StreamNeo is the cloud alternative: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded videos from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. Each slot streams what you upload up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card; one free day is available per account. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month.
