To make a YouTube live stream try to recover after a disconnect, enable automatic reconnect in your encoder. In OBS Studio, turn on Automatically Reconnect and set a retry delay and maximum retry count under Settings > Advanced > Network (labels and locations can vary by version). This makes OBS retry sending the stream; it does not guarantee that YouTube’s viewer-facing broadcast will recover in every case.
YouTube’s Auto-start & auto-stop controls are different: they let the encoder start or stop streaming when enabled, but YouTube does not describe them as automatic reconnection after an interruption. YouTube’s stream settings help explains the controls.
How do I set OBS to reconnect after a dropped stream?
- Open OBS settings. In OBS Studio, select Settings > Advanced > Network. The exact location or wording may differ by version.
- Enable automatic reconnect. Turn on Automatically Reconnect, then choose the retry delay and maximum number of retries. OBS retries after a wait that doubles after each attempt; the maximum-retry setting limits attempts, and setting the retry count to zero disables reconnecting. OBS does not prescribe one best delay or retry count for every stream. See the OBS connection troubleshooting guide and OBS output reference (version 33.0.0).
- Apply the change and test it. Before relying on these settings during an important broadcast, test the stream and verify that the YouTube player recovers as expected. Reconnection is an attempt by OBS, not a promise that every interruption will restore the same live event.
Keep the correct YouTube stream key and server URL configured in OBS. YouTube describes the stream key as information that tells the encoder where to send the feed and lets YouTube accept it. Treat the key like a password: do not publish or share it. YouTube’s encoder settings cover stream keys and encoder setup.
Does YouTube automatically reconnect a live stream?
Do not rely on YouTube’s Auto-start & auto-stop setting as a reconnect feature. When enabled, it lets a creator start or stop streaming from the encoder. It is not documented as a retry mechanism or as a guarantee that a dropped connection will return the audience to a recovered broadcast. Configure retries in the encoder, then check YouTube’s Live Control Room to confirm what viewers can see.

What to check when reconnecting does not work
Confirm the encoder is still sending
- Check OBS’s output state and error messages. If it stopped or exhausted its retries, restart the output manually after addressing the cause.
- In YouTube Live Control Room, check the preview and stream health. Confirm the event is accessible and the encoder is using the intended stream key and server URL.
- Do not expose the stream key in screenshots, recordings, or public chat. If it is exposed, replace it in YouTube and update the encoder.
Reduce bitrate if the connection cannot sustain it
OBS identifies dropped frames as a sign that the connection is unstable or the selected bitrate is beyond what it can sustain. Use an upload speed test as a guide, but do not treat a single result as a guarantee of stable capacity throughout a broadcast. OBS suggests starting at 75% of total upload speed; treat that as OBS guidance, not a universal target. Lower the bitrate if needed, test under the conditions you expect to stream in, and choose video quality that your sustained upload connection can support.
YouTube publishes encoder bitrate recommendations by codec, resolution, and frame rate. Consult the matching row in YouTube’s encoder settings rather than applying one bitrate figure to every format. YouTube also recommends testing before going live and monitoring stream health.

Check the network path and equipment
OBS recommends a wired connection for streaming and lists unstable Wi-Fi, faulty cables or other network hardware, outdated network drivers, security software, VPNs, and bundled network-optimization software among possible causes. Check the modem/router, network card, switches, extenders, and Ethernet cable; try a wired connection where practical. If local checks do not resolve the issue, contact your ISP because route congestion or changes on its network may be outside your control. An Ethernet cable can help provide a wired connection or replace a suspect cable, but it cannot fix every router, ISP, or service problem.
How to prepare a backup encoder for an important broadcast
A backup encoder can be useful when a broadcast is important enough to justify extra setup, but it is not necessary for every casual stream. Configure the backup ahead of time and test that it actually takes over in the player. YouTube’s encoder setup guidance and live streaming tips cover preparation and monitoring.

- Set up the primary and backup encoders before the event.
- Start the encoders early enough to check the preview, event accessibility, and stream health.
- For a failover test, stop the primary encoder or unplug its Ethernet cable, then verify that the player rolls over to the backup encoder.
- Check that the local recording file is growing and monitor audio and video quality during the event.
Why does my YouTube stream keep disconnecting?
Repeated disconnects usually require fixing the connection or encoder conditions, not simply increasing retry attempts. Investigate whether upload capacity is consistently sufficient, whether Wi-Fi or a cable is unstable, and whether network equipment, drivers, VPNs, or security software are interfering. If OBS reconnects but the underlying problem remains, it may disconnect again. For high-stakes streams, test the full setup—including failover—before the scheduled broadcast.
