You can keep a YouTube broadcast running while your own computer is off by hosting FFmpeg on a VPS. FFmpeg reads your video in real time and sends it to YouTube Live; YouTube then delivers the broadcast to viewers. To make the setup resilient, configure the stream in YouTube Live Control Room, use YouTube’s current ingest URL and stream key, supervise FFmpeg, and monitor YouTube’s stream health—not just whether the process is running.
What runs on the VPS—and what runs on YouTube
The VPS is an always-on remote computer. It holds or accesses your media, runs Linux and FFmpeg, and can use a service supervisor to restart FFmpeg after a process exit or server reboot. FFmpeg encodes or reads the media and pushes a contribution stream to YouTube. YouTube is still the platform that hosts and delivers the live broadcast.
This arrangement removes your home computer and home internet connection from the stream path, but it does not make the broadcast infallible. A VPS provider’s CPU capacity, network, storage, and service reliability vary; YouTube’s technical documentation does not certify a VPS provider or specify a universal server size for a particular stream.
Prepare the YouTube live stream and protect its key
- Create or configure the live event. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and set up the broadcast. Use an event configured to accept the encoder feed, and review its visibility, scheduling, and audience settings before going live.
- Copy the current ingest URL and stream key. Get the server URL and key from the live setup for the event. Do not assume there is one universal endpoint: YouTube supplies the ingestion information, and the valid endpoint and path matter. The YouTube Live API’s liveStreams resource documents RTMPS ingestion fields, including primary and optional backup addresses.
- Keep the key secret. Treat it like a password. Avoid putting a real key in published commands, shell history, public logs, screenshots, or source control. If you believe it has been exposed, replace or reset it through YouTube’s live setup before using the stream again.
YouTube recommends RTMPS for ordinary live content. RTMPS encrypts the connection; Google’s RTMPS ingestion guide specifies port 443 and explains the importance of the valid ingest hostname for TLS/SNI authentication. Use the URL YouTube provides rather than constructing an endpoint from a generic example.

Choose a format and bitrate your VPS can sustain
YouTube’s current encoder settings guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video, frame rates up to 60 fps, constant bitrate (CBR), and AAC or MP3 audio. It recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. These are YouTube’s encoder recommendations, not guarantees that a particular VPS can encode the selected format continuously.
For H.264, YouTube’s published recommendations include:

The figures above are YouTube recommendations, not VPS sizing specifications. Bitrate needs depend on resolution, frame rate, codec, and the available upload capacity. Allow network headroom for audio and transport overhead, then test the actual VPS under sustained load. The cited guidance does not establish a universal CPU, RAM, bandwidth allowance, or provider plan for any of these settings.

Pick the ingest protocol for the job
RTMPS is the sensible starting point for a straightforward 24/7 loop: it encrypts the contribution connection and is intended for typical low-latency live delivery. YouTube also documents HLS and DASH ingestion. Those segment-based options support additional codecs in YouTube’s comparison but generally have higher latency. If a workflow specifically requires a codec or delivery behavior that changes the protocol choice, check YouTube’s protocol comparison and encoder guidance before configuring the encoder.
Install FFmpeg and send a file in real time
Install FFmpeg using the package or build appropriate for your VPS operating system, then check the installed build’s protocol support. FFmpeg packages are not identical; do not assume RTMPS is supported merely because FFmpeg is installed. The FFmpeg protocol documentation describes RTMP variants, and its documentation shows real-time file input with the -re option and FLV output.
The documented pattern is:
ffmpeg -re -i myfile -f flv rtmp://myserver/live/mystreamFor YouTube, substitute your actual media path, the current YouTube ingest URL supplied for the event, and the private stream key in the URL format supported by your installed FFmpeg build. Do not publish or log a real key. Confirm the endpoint and protocol work with your build before relying on the command for a continuous broadcast.

If the uploaded video is already encoded in the desired format and you do not need to change its audio or video, a copy/remux approach may reduce CPU use; if FFmpeg must transcode, sustained CPU demand depends on the input, output settings, and codec. Test the chosen workflow on the selected server instead of assuming that a resolution or bitrate alone predicts CPU requirements.
Keep the process running with a supervisor
For a continuous service, configure a supervisor such as systemd to start FFmpeg at boot and restart it after an unexpected process exit. This is an implementation pattern, not a YouTube requirement, and restarting a process does not prove that YouTube is receiving a healthy broadcast. A restart may also fail if the media path, credentials, ingest URL, network, or server itself is unavailable.

Before enabling automatic restarts, test the command interactively and make sure logs are accessible without exposing the stream key. Configure the service to run under an appropriate account, start after required storage or network mounts are available, and use a deliberate restart policy rather than an uncontrolled rapid loop. The exact unit configuration depends on the operating system and deployment; the official YouTube material does not provide or certify a systemd unit.

Test and monitor the broadcast
Test before switching to public operation, using audio and motion similar to the intended stream. YouTube’s guidance says, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” Watch the event in Live Control Room and check its stream health and messages. The YouTube Live API’s liveStreams resource describes health reporting for issues such as low bitrate, frame-rate mismatch, and missing audio.
- Check the YouTube-side stream health and messages, not only the local FFmpeg process status.
- Review FFmpeg logs alongside YouTube’s health indicators to distinguish a local input, encoding, or connection error from a YouTube-side configuration issue.
- Verify after a VPS reboot that the supervisor starts the service and the intended event receives the feed.
- Test what happens after a dropped connection and confirm that the process and event recover as intended.
- Set up an alert for a missing stream or failed process; process monitoring and platform-side stream health are separate checks.
These checks reduce the chance that a silent failure goes unnoticed; they do not guarantee uninterrupted service.
Common problems and what to check

Understand the VPS trade-offs and costs
A VPS gives you control over the encoder, files, and process supervision, but you are responsible for choosing a server and network plan that can sustain the workload. Compare providers on sustained CPU capability for your codec and resolution, outbound bandwidth allowance, storage, and recovery support. No provider-specific price, plan, or reliability guarantee is established here, so check the provider’s current terms and test your own workload.

For a self-managed VPS, account for the recurring server charge and any storage or data-transfer charges in the provider’s plan. Higher-resolution or more demanding transcoding may require more compute, but YouTube’s recommended bitrate does not by itself tell you what that compute will cost.
