Choose OBS if you need to build and adjust scenes visually; choose FFmpeg if your stream can run as a repeatable command-line media pipeline. Neither is proven categorically more reliable for 24/7 streaming. In either case, keeping a YouTube stream running depends on the source, host, network, monitoring, and a recovery plan—not just the encoder.

OBS vs FFmpeg: the practical difference

Consideration OBS FFmpeg
Best fit Visual production with scenes and operator interaction; useful when you expect to change what viewers see while live. Repeatable, scripted media processing when the source and output can be defined in a command-line workflow.
How you operate it A desktop application; configure the YouTube connection and manage the live output through its interface. A command-line tool; specify the media input, encoding, and destination in a command or script.
Source workflow Suited to an operator arranging visual elements and switching scenes. Suited to a defined media input processed through a repeatable pipeline.
Reliability evidence No controlled head-to-head uptime or failure-recovery result is established. No controlled head-to-head uptime or failure-recovery result is established.

This is a workflow comparison, not a benchmark. The reviewed official material does not establish which tool uses less CPU, is easier to set up, or reconnects more reliably in a particular configuration. OBS’s official knowledge base is at OBS Knowledge Base; FFmpeg’s official command-line reference is ffmpeg Documentation.

Choose OBS when the stream needs an operator

OBS is the more natural fit when the broadcast is assembled visually and you need to change scenes or other on-screen content during the stream. That flexibility comes with an operational requirement: the OBS host and its operator-controlled setup must remain available for the stream to continue.

Choose FFmpeg when the pipeline is repeatable

FFmpeg makes sense when a known media source can be handled with a defined command or script. It is suited to automation, but a command does not by itself provide monitoring or a complete recovery strategy. You must plan how the process is supervised and what happens after a host, source, or network failure.

Configure either encoder for YouTube

YouTube’s current encoder guidance recommends RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval, and a maximum frame rate of 60 fps. It says keyframes should not be more than four seconds apart. The right resolution and bitrate depend on the codec and on the upload connection that will carry the stream; use a setting the connection can sustain reliably. See YouTube’s live encoder settings and bitrates.

Use a bitrate appropriate to codec and resolution

For H.264, YouTube lists these examples:

Output Minimum bitrate Recommended bitrate
720p at 30 fps 3 Mbps 8 Mbps
1080p at 30 fps 5 Mbps 14 Mbps

These figures are YouTube’s H.264 guidance, not universal targets for AV1 or H.265. YouTube provides separate recommendations for those codecs. Do not copy an H.264 bitrate into a different codec’s configuration without checking its corresponding guidance. Leave room for ordinary network variation rather than setting the encoder at the connection’s best-case upload speed.

Set video and audio deliberately

  • Video codec: YouTube lists H.264, H.265, and AV1 for encoder ingest.
  • Frame rate: Up to 60 fps is supported in the guidance; use a rate suited to the source and the connection.
  • Rate control: Use CBR as YouTube recommends.
  • Keyframes: Set a two-second interval; do not exceed four seconds.
  • Audio: YouTube lists AAC or MP3. For stereo it specifies 44.1 kHz sampling and 128 Kbps.
  • Color: Rec. 709 is YouTube’s recommendation for SDR.

For HDR or codecs unsupported by RTMP, YouTube documents HLS ingest. It has higher latency than RTMP because video is sent in segments, and the ultra-low-latency option is disabled for HLS. HLS requires HTTPS POST/PUT, TS segments, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, and segment durations of one to four seconds. OBS is listed among encoders that support HLS output. Consult YouTube’s HLS ingest guidance before choosing that route.

Connect the encoder to YouTube Live

  1. Prepare the live event in YouTube Studio. In Live Control Room, create or open the stream and obtain the server URL and stream key. YouTube distinguishes the broadcast viewers watch from the stream resource containing the encoder connection settings.
  2. Enter the connection details in the encoder. Configure OBS or your FFmpeg output to send to YouTube using the server URL and stream key. Prefer RTMPS where supported.
  3. Check the output settings. Match the codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, audio, and keyframe interval to YouTube’s guidance and your stable upload capacity.
  4. Start the encoder and inspect YouTube’s preview. Confirm that video and audio arrive as intended and that the stream health indicators do not show a problem before directing viewers to the live event.
  5. Protect the stream key. Treat it as a credential: do not publish it in scripts, logs, screenshots, or source control. If it is exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder configuration.

YouTube recommends testing with audio and movement similar to the actual stream, then monitoring stream health while live. A short test can reveal wrong audio routing, a mismatched output setting, or an upload connection that cannot sustain the chosen bitrate.

Plan for continuous operation and recovery

A 24/7 stream is a system, not just an encoder setting. Your video source must remain available; the computer or server must stay powered and responsive; the network must sustain the upload; and someone or something must detect and respond to a failure. A stream can stop because of any link in that chain.

  • Source: Make sure the media or scene setup will not run out, freeze, or require an unattended manual action.
  • Host: Prevent sleep or shutdown and consider power and hardware failures. A desktop encoder cannot transmit while its host is off or unresponsive.
  • Network: Check sustained upload capacity, not only a brief speed-test peak. Monitor for congestion and interruptions.
  • Monitoring: Check YouTube’s stream health and have a way to notice when the encoder or ingest connection stops.
  • Recovery: Decide who or what will restart the process, verify that it is sending again, and escalate if the same failure recurs.

Google’s YouTube Live API guide describes a 24/7 feed and explains how a single live stream resource can be bound to multiple live broadcasts. That resource model can support a continuous feed alongside separate events, but using the API is not required for an ordinary encoder stream. The guide was last updated September 14, 2026: YouTube Live Streaming API documentation. It does not promise that OBS or FFmpeg will automatically recover from every outage.

Decide how to handle long broadcasts and archives

YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Its encoder guidance does not establish that one broadcast longer than 12 hours will produce a single complete archive. If a complete recording matters, plan an independent local recording or another capture method, and verify the resulting file rather than assuming the live event’s archive will cover the entire run. See YouTube’s live stream archiving guidance.

Copyright, reused content, and monetization

Using a recording as a live source does not remove the need to have the rights to its video and audio. Before a long-running broadcast, confirm that you have permission for every included component, including music, images, clips, and recordings. A live stream may be interrupted or restricted if it violates YouTube’s rules or triggers a rights claim. Review YouTube’s copyright guidance and YouTube channel monetization policies, especially if the content is repetitive or reused.

YouTube says live-stream monetization is available to channels in the YouTube Partner Program. Eligibility and channel-specific conditions apply; check YouTube’s current monetization guidance rather than assuming that running a continuous stream makes a channel eligible.

When a cloud service is a better operating fit

If the core requirement is simply to keep prerecorded video streaming to YouTube without leaving a local computer running, a hosted service is another option—not a claim that OBS or FFmpeg is less reliable. YouTube’s encoder guide identifies Gyre as a cloud-based tool for continuous streaming of prerecorded video. Its current pricing and terms are not established here, so check the provider directly before choosing it.

Or let it run in the cloud

StreamNeo is a YouTube-only cloud service for looping uploaded videos or playlists. Upload a recording, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; the cloud keeps it running without a computer, OBS, or home connection staying on. It streams the upload as made, up to 4K at 60 fps, at one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly service is $9.99 per month. Start your free first day with StreamNeo.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can OBS and FFmpeg use the same YouTube stream key?

Yes. YouTube provides a server URL and stream key for the encoder connection; configure the tool you choose with those details. Do not run both encoders against the same stream key at the same time unless you have deliberately planned how YouTube should handle the competing inputs.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does a 24/7 stream require the YouTube Live API?

No. The API documentation explains YouTube’s broadcast and stream resources, but a normal encoder workflow can be set up in Live Control Room without using the API.
