To keep a YouTube live stream running after its first video ends, loop the video in the encoder that is sending the stream. In OBS Studio, enable Loop on a Media Source; for several files, use a VLC Video source and enable Loop Playlist. YouTube does not replay a finished upload into a live broadcast: your encoder must keep sending valid video and audio.
Loop one video in OBS Studio
-
In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go live, then create or select an encoder stream. Copy the stream URL and stream key into OBS. Keep the key private: YouTube describes it as the password and address for your stream. See YouTube’s encoder setup guide.
-
In OBS, add a Media Source to the scene and select the video file. Enable Loop in the source’s properties. The setting makes that media source restart playback when it reaches the end; it does not by itself start or maintain the YouTube connection.
-
Check that the source is visible in the active scene and that OBS is outputting the scene you intend to broadcast. Start the encoder and confirm its preview appears in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room.

Check YouTube’s stream controls separately
In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, review the event’s auto-start and auto-stop settings. YouTube says these controls let creators start or stop a stream from the encoder. If the event should stay live, avoid a configuration that ends it when the encoder stops sending. A media loop cannot prevent a connection failure, a stopped encoder, or an event-ending setting from stopping the broadcast. See YouTube’s encoder setup guide and Live Control Room guidance.

What changes when a stream ends or runs for hours
Ending the stream and getting an archive
YouTube’s encoder guide says, “To end the stream, stop sending content from your encoder.” It also says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured. If retaining a recording matters, make a local backup rather than relying on an archive for a broadcast that could exceed 12 hours. See YouTube’s encoder setup guide and YouTube’s live-stream archiving guidance.
DVR and viewer seeking
DVR allows viewers to pause, rewind, and resume a live stream. YouTube says rewind may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours. Disabling DVR prevents viewers from seeking backward during the live broadcast, though a recording may still be available after the stream ends. See YouTube’s DVR guidance.
Handing viewers to another event
If the goal is to send viewers to a Premiere or another live stream after the current event ends, YouTube’s Live Redirect can make that handoff. It does not extend the current event. YouTube advises setting up the Premiere first and telling viewers to wait about two seconds for their screens to reload. See YouTube’s Live Redirect guidance.

Troubleshoot a stream that stops at the video’s end
-
The same file does not restart: Confirm Loop is enabled on the Media Source, the source is visible in the active scene, and the selected file plays correctly. Test the ending in an unlisted event.
-
The playlist stops after its last item: Confirm you used a VLC Video source, VLC is installed, the intended files are in the playlist, and Loop Playlist is enabled.
-
The video repeats, but YouTube ends the event: The playback loop and live connection are separate. Check whether OBS is still streaming, whether it is sending valid video and audio, and whether the event’s auto-stop behavior is ending it.
-
The Live Control Room preview is missing or unhealthy: Check OBS’s output and connection, confirm the correct stream URL and private stream key are configured, and use YouTube’s preview and stream-health indicators before going public.
