Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →To make an OBS stream retry after a disconnect, open Settings → Output, enable Automatically Reconnect, and review Retry Delay and Maximum Retries. In YouTube Studio, check the stream’s Auto-stop setting: if you want the broadcast to remain available for a possible reconnection, do not configure it to stop when the encoder stops sending. These settings can help, but they do not guarantee that every interruption will resume the same broadcast. Test before relying on an unattended stream.
What automatic reconnection can—and cannot—do
OBS can retry its connection to YouTube after an interruption. YouTube Studio separately controls whether the broadcast stops when the encoder stops sending. Both ends matter: an OBS reconnect indicator by itself does not prove YouTube is receiving the feed or that the original broadcast is still live.
YouTube’s cited help pages do not specify a universal reconnect grace period, and neither YouTube nor OBS promises that every retry restores the same broadcast. The result depends on the interruption and the broadcast’s state, so verify the behavior with a test rather than relying on a particular number of seconds.
Set up OBS and YouTube for a possible reconnect
- Select the YouTube encoder stream. In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, create or select the stream, then copy its stream URL and stream key into OBS. The key is the credential OBS uses to send the feed. Keep it private. See YouTube’s encoder setup guidance and live stream settings.
- Enable OBS retries. In OBS, open Settings → Output and enable Automatically Reconnect. Review Retry Delay and Maximum Retries. OBS’s current settings include these controls, but their exact placement or defaults may differ by installed version; choose retry behavior appropriate to your connection and test it. OBS Project
- Review Auto-stop in YouTube Studio. In the stream’s settings, check whether Auto-stop is enabled. If the goal is to allow a possible reconnection after a sender interruption, avoid configuring YouTube to stop the broadcast when sending stops. This is not a guarantee of recovery. YouTube Help explains, “When these settings are on, you can start or stop streaming from your encoder.” See Manage live stream settings.
- Run a private or unlisted test. Check the YouTube preview and stream health before the test. Interrupt the sender or connection briefly, then check whether OBS reconnects and whether the YouTube player and Live Control Room show the expected state. YouTube recommends testing encoder settings before an event: YouTube encoder setup.
- Keep a local recording for important events. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, recommends keeping a local archive backup, and warns that streams over 12 hours may not be captured. Do not treat the YouTube archive as your only copy. See YouTube’s live stream archive guidance.
Choose between retrying one encoder and using backup failover
| Approach | What it does | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| OBS automatic reconnect | Retries the encoder’s connection to YouTube. It is simpler than setting up a second sender, but still depends on the same computer, OBS process, and network becoming usable again. | Review retry delay and maximum retries; test that OBS reconnects and that YouTube receives the feed. Retries cannot fix a persistently unstable network or an encoder process that has stopped. |
| Backup encoder failover | Uses a separate encoder route as a backup. It adds setup and requires the secondary sender and stream settings to be ready. | Test that the player rolls over, that the backup source and settings match, and that recordings are preserved. YouTube advises: “For test encoder failover, stop the primary encoder or unplug its Ethernet cable.” See YouTube live streaming tips. |
Troubleshoot when the stream does not return
- OBS keeps disconnecting or dropping frames: OBS’s troubleshooting guidance points to instability in the network path or bitrate. Retry controls only make another attempt; check the connection to the ingest server and whether the bitrate is stable. See OBS stream connection troubleshooting.
- OBS reconnects, but YouTube is not live: Check the Live Control Room preview, health messages, and broadcast state. Do not assume a local reconnect status means YouTube has resumed the same broadcast.
- The encoder reports an error starting the stream: Check that the stream key in OBS matches the one shown in YouTube Studio. YouTube also advises updating the encoder when needed. See YouTube’s encoder troubleshooting guidance.
- A planned backup does not take over: Test the primary-to-backup transition before the event, including the player’s rollover and the backup’s source and stream settings. A secondary encoder is useful only if it is configured and verified.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep a pre-recorded YouTube stream running continuously, StreamNeo runs uploaded videos from the cloud rather than from your home computer. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; each slot streams at the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price, and the service automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly service is $9.99 per month. It plays uploaded videos, not a live camera feed, and streams to YouTube only. Start your free first day with StreamNeo.
