A pause between podcast episodes can come from a gap in the stream feed or the handoff between episodes. But if the stream keeps playing while falling behind, buffering, or catching up, the delay may be in YouTube’s player or the connection instead. If you paused or rewound, you may simply be watching behind the live point. The right fix depends on which pattern you see.
First, work out where the delay occurs
Check whether the pause is part of the program reaching viewers or only part of your playback. Ask another viewer whether they see the same gap, and note whether video, audio, or both stop. Also note whether it happens at the same episode boundary and whether the stream is a continuous live broadcast, a transition to another YouTube event, or a playlist of uploaded episodes.
- Multiple viewers see the same blank or silent break: Check the episode timeline, handoff, encoder, and incoming stream.
- Only your player falls behind or buffers: Check your playback position, network, and the stream’s latency setting.
- The delay follows a pause or rewind: You may be watching from the point where you paused rather than the live edge.
- The break is about two seconds at a transition: It may be the reload when a creator uses YouTube Live Redirect to send viewers to a Premiere or another live stream.
If you are watching the stream
Check whether playback is behind live
With DVR, pausing a live stream and resuming it continues from the paused point; it does not necessarily jump to the live point. Use the player’s live-edge control, if available, to return to the current broadcast. DVR availability can be limited or unavailable on streams longer than 12 hours, and limits may be lower on some devices or older app versions. YouTube explains DVR and live playback.
Distinguish buffering from an episode gap
YouTube defines live-stream latency as the time between an encoder or camera capturing an event and viewers seeing it. Latency is not the same as a blank interval between two episodes: a viewer can be behind the broadcast without the source itself having a gap.

If the player buffers or catches up inconsistently, network congestion or a weak connection may be involved. YouTube cautions that lower latency leaves less read-ahead buffer, which can make playback more prone to buffering. Compare playback on another device or network if practical; if others see the same break at the same point, report that timing to the channel operator.
If you create the stream
Check the source and encoder first
- Inspect the episode timeline. Confirm that the files or playlist items meet at the intended points, including any deliberate silence, blank frames, or transition interval.
- Check the local archive. If you record locally, compare the affected boundary in that recording with what viewers received. A gap in the archive points toward the source or encoding path; a clean archive does not by itself prove where the issue occurred.
- Review encoder status and logs. Look for dropped frames, interruptions, or errors around the timestamp when episodes change.
- Check CPU load and outbound internet. YouTube’s stream-quality troubleshooting guidance includes encoder errors, CPU load, and the outbound connection among the checks for stream problems. Avoid changing several settings at once; note the current configuration and correlate any change with the next affected boundary.
- Compare reports from viewers. Record the timestamp, duration, whether both audio and video stop, and whether the issue recurs at each episode transition. This helps separate a source-side break from an individual player problem.
YouTube’s technical guidance for DASH says a failed media-segment upload (PUT) corresponds to a gap in the video stream; it recommends retrying failed requests and signaling repeated failures to the encoder operator. This is a possible mechanism only for a setup using DASH ingestion, not evidence that every stream uses DASH or that a particular upload failed. See YouTube’s ingestion-protocol guidance.

Choose latency for the kind of broadcast
Latency settings trade responsiveness against playback stability. YouTube describes normal latency as suitable for non-interactive streams and as the option with the lowest viewer buffering. Low latency is intended for limited audience interaction; ultra-low latency is for highly interactive streams and has greater buffering risk.
YouTube says most viewers on low-latency streams experience less than 10 seconds of latency, and most viewers on ultra-low-latency streams experience less than five seconds. These are typical figures in YouTube Help, not guarantees for an individual channel or an explanation for a gap between episodes. Read YouTube’s explanation of live-stream latency before changing the setting.

Do not switch ingestion protocols as a guess
YouTube says HLS has higher latency because it sends video in segments rather than as a continuous stream; its guidance specifies segment durations of one to four seconds. HLS is intended for use cases such as HDR or codecs not supported by RTMP. Changing protocols is not a general cure for episode gaps: first confirm what your encoder supports and what your broadcast requires. Check YouTube’s encoder and ingestion guidance.
Why a transition may briefly reload
If the creator uses YouTube Live Redirect to move viewers from a stream to a Premiere or another live stream, YouTube advises allowing about two seconds for the screen to reload. That narrow transition behavior may explain a short pause at that handoff; it does not explain longer or recurring gaps between episodes in every type of stream. See YouTube’s Live Redirect guidance.
