For a typical H.264 YouTube podcast stream, plan for about 6.2 Mbps of stable upload bandwidth at 1080p30 or 3.8 Mbps at 720p30. Those estimates include YouTube’s recommended video bitrate, 128 kbps stereo audio, and 20% upload headroom. They are planning targets, not official minimum-speed guarantees; your encoder’s actual settings and other network traffic matter.

Upload-speed targets by resolution and frame rate

YouTube’s live-encoder guidance recommends different incoming bitrates depending on codec, resolution, and frame rate. The connection targets below are calculated from its H.264 video recommendations, plus 128 kbps stereo audio and 20% headroom. They are not separate speed requirements published by YouTube.

Incoming video YouTube-recommended H.264 video bitrate Approximate upload target with audio and 20% headroom
720p30 3 Mbps 3.8 Mbps
720p60 8 Mbps 9.8 Mbps
1080p30 5 Mbps 6.2 Mbps
1080p60 17 Mbps 20.5 Mbps

These figures apply to the live stream sent from your encoder to YouTube. YouTube says it transcodes the incoming stream into output formats for viewers, so you size your uplink for your outgoing feed—not by adding together the playback bandwidth used by viewers. The live-ingestion recommendations are also different from YouTube’s separate guidance for video files uploaded after recording. YouTube’s live encoder settings and bitrate table does not define a special bitrate category for podcasts. A mostly static camera may suit a lower setting, but choose based on the actual show and encoder configuration.

How to calculate the bandwidth your setup needs

Use the total bitrate leaving the encoder, not the speed shown for downloads. YouTube recommends leaving 20% room above the total outgoing bitrate and counting both primary and backup feeds where applicable. Audio is a smaller part of the total than video, but it still uses bandwidth.

  1. Find the configured outgoing video bitrate. Use the encoder setting and the recommendation for your selected codec, resolution, and frame rate. For H.264, for example, YouTube recommends 5 Mbps video at 1080p30 and 3 Mbps at 720p30.
  2. Add audio and any other outgoing feed. YouTube’s listed stereo audio setting is 128 kbps. If you send a backup stream, include its bitrate too.
  3. Allow at least 20% headroom. As a planning calculation, multiply the combined outgoing bitrate by 1.2. For 1080p30 H.264 with 128 kbps audio, that is (5 Mbps + 0.128 Mbps) × 1.2, or about 6.2 Mbps.
  4. Leave room for the rest of the network. Other people, devices, and services using the same connection can reduce the upload capacity available to your encoder.

YouTube’s bandwidth guidance is available in Streaming tips. A nominal plan speed or one good test result cannot guarantee that the connection will hold steady throughout a live show.

Is 5 Mbps upload enough for a YouTube podcast?

It is below the approximate 6.2 Mbps planning target for 1080p30 H.264 with stereo audio and 20% headroom. That does not make every stream at that setting impossible, but it leaves less margin for shared traffic and variation. For 720p30 H.264, the comparable target is about 3.8 Mbps, so a stable 5 Mbps upload may provide more room—provided other network use does not consume it.

Amazon Basics USB 3.0 to 10/100/1000 Gigabit Ethernet Internet Adapter, Compatible with Windows and macOS, Black
  • Connects a USB 3.0 device (computer/laptop) to a router, modem, or network switch to deliver Gigabit Ethernet to your network connection. Does not support Smart TV or gaming consoles (e.g.Nintendo Switch).
  • Supported features include Wake-on-LAN function, Green Ethernet & IEEE 802.3az-2010 (Energy Efficient Ethernet)
  • Supports IPv4/IPv6 pack Checksum Offload Engine (COE) to reduce Cental Processing Unit (CPU) loading
  • Compatible with Windows 8.1 or higher, Mac OS

Compare the connection’s usable upload capacity with the complete outgoing load. If the connection is inconsistent, there is competing traffic, or you need a backup feed, reduce the encoder bitrate or resolution, obtain more usable upload capacity, or otherwise change the setup before relying on it.

Encoder settings that affect the requirement

Resolution, frame rate, and codec

Higher frame rates can require substantially more bitrate: YouTube’s H.264 recommendation is 5 Mbps for 1080p30 and 17 Mbps for 1080p60. YouTube publishes separate recommendations for H.264, AV1, and H.265, so do not apply the H.264 examples in the table to a different codec without checking the corresponding guidance. Select a setting that serves the podcast’s visual needs rather than assuming the highest available resolution or frame rate is necessary.

Rate control, keyframes, and transport

  • YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR) encoding.
  • Set a 2-second keyframe interval; YouTube says not to exceed 4 seconds.
  • YouTube recommends RTMPS for live streaming.

These settings do not replace sufficient upload capacity. Use YouTube’s encoder settings guidance alongside the bitrate target for the incoming stream.

Test the connection before the show

  1. Run an upload-speed test on the same internet connection the encoder will use. A download-speed result does not establish that upload bandwidth is sufficient.
  2. Schedule a rehearsal using the planned resolution, frame rate, audio, and a representative amount of movement. This checks the actual setup rather than an abstract speed target.
  3. Check YouTube’s stream health and read encoder messages during the rehearsal. If results vary or the stream shows problems, lower the bitrate or resolution, reduce competing network use, or secure more reliable usable upload capacity.
  4. If using a backup feed, account for its outgoing bitrate as well as the primary stream when assessing the connection.

YouTube recommends testing and leaving headroom, but these measures cannot guarantee uninterrupted streaming: congestion, shared traffic, and short-term network variation can still affect a live connection. Its general guidance does not prescribe a specific router, cable, or internet provider as the fix.
