That was a pregame expectation, not confirmation that Zellweger ultimately played.
Is Olen Zellweger cleared to play?
The Sabres’ Oct. 2 update reported that Zellweger had returned to full practice after entering concussion protocol on Sept. 22. Ruff said, “We anticipate getting him in the lineup.” The reports available before the Chicago game established that he practiced fully and was expected to play; they did not establish his eventual game appearance.
What happened and when did he return?
- Sept. 22: Zellweger was hit by Columbus defenseman Carson Soucy late in the second period of a preseason game, did not return, and entered concussion protocol, according to the Sabres’ game report.
- Oct. 1: Buffalo’s transaction log listed him as placed on injured reserve.
- Oct. 2: He took part fully in practice and said the extra days had made a “massive difference,” in the team’s practice report. He had missed the season-opening loss in Columbus.
- Oct. 3: The team expected him to come off injured reserve and play against Chicago, but the pregame updates did not confirm either an official activation or his appearance.
What did Zellweger say about the injury?
Asked about the hit, Zellweger said: “I don’t think it was a crazy dirty hit, but I don’t think it was perfectly clean, either. It’s just one of those things where you’ve got to put yourself in a better position.” He also said after returning to practice, “I feel great. I really wanted to play in the first game, but it was just a bit too soon, I think. The extra couple days actually made a massive difference, so I’m looking forward to getting going here.” Both statements were attributed to him in the Sabres’ Oct. 2 practice report.
What was known about his lineup role?
Zellweger practiced alongside Owen Power, as he had at the beginning of training camp. That pairing was a possibility, not a confirmed game deployment: Ruff had not decided how he would manage the defensive pairs in games. The team said Dennis Gilbert’s return to Rochester freed a roster spot for Zellweger to come off injured reserve, while the transaction log reviewed at the time showed only the Oct. 1 placement.

What the return update does—and does not—confirm
Practice participation, an expected lineup spot, a roster activation, and a confirmed appearance are separate milestones. In the Sabres’ reports published before puck drop, full practice participation was confirmed and playing against Chicago was anticipated. The available updates did not confirm the activation or whether he appeared in the game. The reporting provides no basis for a general concussion recovery timetable.
