Sergei Bobrovsky said he accidentally stepped onto the ice before Gavin McKenna’s rookie lap because he had “completely forgot” about it. He later spoke with McKenna, and joked that he pretended it was his own first game.
What happened before McKenna’s NHL debut?
Before Toronto hosted Montreal at Scotiabank Arena on September 29, 2026, Gavin McKenna took a rookie lap ahead of his NHL debut. McKenna, the No. 1 pick in the 2026 NHL Draft, received a strong ovation when he was introduced. Bobrovsky went onto the ice while the rest of Toronto’s lineup was still in the tunnel, then skated off to the side as McKenna received his welcome. NHL.com’s account of McKenna’s rookie lap and Sportsnet’s report on Bobrovsky’s explanation describe the pregame moment.
Why did Bobrovsky come out before the rookie lap?
Bobrovsky said at Toronto’s Friday practice that he had forgotten McKenna was about to take the lap: “I just completely forgot. I didn’t think about it.” He added, “I didn’t mean to do that. So it just happened by accident.” That is Bobrovsky’s explanation of his intent; the available reports describe a brief pregame mix-up, not a deliberate attempt to interrupt McKenna.
Did Bobrovsky apologize or speak with McKenna?
Bobrovsky said he spoke with McKenna afterward. He also joked, “I pretended that it’s my first game too,” as McKenna received the crowd’s warm reception. The reports do not describe a formal apology.

McKenna took his lap before Toronto’s season opener against Montreal. The cited reports do not set out a formal league rule or exact protocol for rookie laps, so Bobrovsky’s brief appearance should not be described as a rule violation.
How did Toronto’s season opener end?
Montreal beat Toronto 3–2. Sportsnet reported that Bobrovsky stopped 21 of 24 shots in the game. Those figures provide the immediate game context; the rookie-lap incident happened before puck drop.
