J.J. McCarthy said he did not expect Minnesota to trade him to the New York Giants, but described the move as a chance to make the most of a new situation. The reported deal sends the quarterback to New York for a fifth-round draft pick; the available report does not identify the pick’s draft year.
What McCarthy said about the trade
“I didn’t anticipate it,” McCarthy said Friday. “But at the end of the day, it’s an opportunity. It’s an opportunity to take advantage of.” He also expressed gratitude for his time in Minnesota and the relationships he built there, according to theScore’s report.
The trade gives McCarthy a new setting after a difficult, injury-affected stretch with the Vikings. It is an opportunity in the sense he described—not evidence yet that he will earn a starting job or succeed in New York.
Why the Giants made a move at quarterback
The report says Jaxson Dart suffered a season-ending knee injury, prompting the Giants to bring in McCarthy. It expected McCarthy to join New York as Jameis Winston’s backup beginning in Week 4. That is a time-sensitive depth-chart assessment from the report, not an independently confirmed current roster update.

McCarthy had been Minnesota’s third-string quarterback behind Kyler Murray and Carson Wentz to start the 2026 season, according to the same article. In New York, the reported immediate role is backup rather than starter.
McCarthy’s Minnesota record and the trade’s uncertainty
TheScore reported that McCarthy started 10 games for Minnesota in 2025, went 6–4, and passed for 1,632 yards with 11 touchdowns and 12 interceptions. It also reported that injuries caused him to miss seven starts. Those figures are season statistics as reported by the outlet, not independently verified here.

Among 36 qualifying quarterbacks, the article placed his 72.6 passer rating and 57.6% completion rate 35th in each category, attributing the comparisons to TruMedia. The available information does not establish an independent league study or broader statistical analysis beyond those reported rankings.
His path in Minnesota was also interrupted before his first season: the report says he missed his entire rookie year after undergoing meniscus surgery in August. Minnesota had selected him in the first round of the 2024 NFL Draft after he led Michigan to a national championship.

What the move could mean for McCarthy and New York
Giants head coach John Harbaugh said McCarthy “can throw it,” “can run it,” and “can make plays.” TheScore also reported Harbaugh called him talented while identifying areas for improvement based on his Minnesota performance. That captures the trade’s two-sided case: McCarthy has traits the Giants may want to develop, but his uneven and injury-affected Vikings tenure leaves substantial uncertainty.
For New York, the fifth-round pick is the reported cost, though the draft year is not stated in the accessible article text. The acquisition gives the team another quarterback after Dart’s injury, but the report’s expected backup role does not establish what McCarthy’s longer-term place on the roster will be.
