Understanding a conversation, joke, or cultural reference in the language it was meant for can change what is available to you: not just the words, but the context around them. Speaking another language offers that kind of practical access, even though it does not guarantee a general boost in intelligence or cognitive ability.

What changes when you can speak another language?

The clearest gift is the ability to communicate across a language barrier. A second language may let you take part in conversations, understand material in its original language, and encounter a culture through more than translations or outside explanations.

In a 2012 review, Viorica Marian and Anthony Shook describe cross-cultural communication and the chance to explore a culture through its native tongue as social benefits of bilingualism. These benefits depend on the situation: knowing a language can open a conversation or source of information, but it does not automatically make someone fluent in every setting or familiar with every cultural reference.

Can language experience affect how we understand other people?

A 2016 study of children found an association between multilingual exposure and performance on a communication task that required interpreting another speaker’s intended meaning. Children exposed to a second language performed as well as bilingual children on that task, although they had lower executive-function scores.

That distinction matters. The finding is consistent with a possible role for social experience and perspective-taking; it does not show that speaking a second language fluently caused the result, nor does one child study establish a general effect for adults or all language learners.

Does being bilingual make you smarter?

There is no settled basis for promising a general cognitive advantage. Executive function includes abilities such as switching between tasks and controlling attention, but results depend on the particular task, participants, and how groups are compared.

In a 2020 population study, Emily S. Nichols and colleagues assessed 11,041 people on 12 executive-function tasks. Bilingual participants had an advantage on one test, while monolingual participants performed better on four. After the researchers matched groups for potential confounds, the differences disappeared. This large study speaks to the executive-function tasks it measured; it does not test every cognitive ability or language context. Read the study record on PubMed.

A 2024 systematic review and quantitative analysis by Vittoria Dentella, Camilla Masullo, and Evelina Leivada examined 39 studies. Its findings reflect a mixed picture: positive and negative effects appeared across different tasks and populations, rather than one consistent advantage. Group averages also cannot predict what an individual learner will experience. Read the review and analyses.

What is the most dependable benefit?

Think of another language first as a route to people, conversations, and cultural material that might otherwise be harder to reach. Cognitive effects are a separate question, and the current evidence does not justify treating better intelligence, memory, or attention as a guaranteed payoff.

For a general-tech reader, the useful distinction is simple: a language can expand what you can communicate with and access; claims about what it does to cognition need to stay specific to the evidence and task.
