You can set up a Galaxy phone or tablet for work, travel, and personal time with a few built-in features: Modes and Routines for changing behavior, Connected devices for services you already use, and Samsung Find for locating supported devices. Start with settings you have, add automations only when useful, and check your model and software version before relying on any feature.
Start with a small setup, not a collection of gadgets
Choose one or two changes for each part of your day. A Work mode might quiet nonessential alerts; a Personal or sleep mode might reduce interruptions later. For travel, make sure you know how to locate supported devices and have a charger that matches your Galaxy model. You do not need another Galaxy device to make this setup useful.
Samsung menu names, available triggers, and supported features vary by model, One UI version, region, and account configuration. Treat the paths below as places to look, then follow the options shown on your own device.
Set up work time with Modes and Routines
Create a Work mode
Open Settings > Modes and Routines and look for a Work preset or the option to create a mode. Modes can group focus settings, including Do Not Disturb and restrictions on app use. Choose which people, apps, and interruptions should still reach you; avoid blocking alerts you need for safety or time-sensitive responsibilities. Add an automation only if it solves a real annoyance
Routines pair a condition or trigger with one or more actions. Samsung’s work examples include muting notification sounds and turning on Wi-Fi. Your device may offer different conditions and actions, so confirm the choices on your screen rather than assuming a particular location or network trigger is available. Begin with one routine, test when it runs, and remove or adjust it if it behaves unexpectedly.
Connect a Windows PC or use a larger screen only if needed
On a Galaxy device, open Settings > Connected devices to review available connections. Samsung groups options such as Link to Windows, Quick Share, DeX, Smart View, SmartThings, Galaxy Wearable, and Android Auto there; what appears depends on the device and setup. If your work requires desktop-style multitasking on an external display, first verify DeX support for your exact model and connection type in Samsung’s DeX FAQ. DeX is optional, not a universal Galaxy feature. Samsung lists model exclusions and notes that DeX on PC is unsupported on newer models or software versions, with Link to Windows suggested instead. Keep travel and commuting practical
Use a Travel or commute mode if it helps
You can create a mode or routine for a commute or trip, but keep its behavior intentional: decide which alerts should remain audible and which connectivity settings you actually want changed. Routines are automations, not a guarantee of better battery life, roaming behavior, or uninterrupted connectivity. Samsung Australia gives examples such as commuting to work and leaving work in its Routines guide.

Prepare device-finding features before you leave
Check Samsung Find or SmartThings Find on your device and account, enable the relevant location and finding settings, and learn what options are available for supported Galaxy devices and earbuds. Do this while you still have the device in hand; do not assume tracking or remote actions are enabled automatically. Samsung’s SmartThings Find guidance explains available ways to locate, lock, or erase supported devices.
Pack a compatible charger; make display gear optional
Check your phone or tablet’s charging specification and choose a compatible charger for that model. For DeX, Samsung recommends a genuine Samsung power supply; it also warns that a computer’s USB port may deliver less power than a regular charger, so the battery can still drain during demanding use. An HDMI cable, keyboard, or mouse is only relevant if your compatible device will be used in a DeX external-display workflow. Make personal and sleep time quieter
Create or adapt a Personal or sleep mode in Settings > Modes and Routines. Choose a simple combination of notification controls and, if useful, display behavior. Keep exceptions for people or alerts you still need to hear. Samsung’s Modes and Routines guidance includes sleep-related examples, but the available controls can differ by device and software.
Use Connected devices for things already in your routine, such as a Windows PC, car, TV, or Galaxy wearable. There is no need to buy a set of Samsung products to complete the setup. Add features one at a time so you can tell which setting or routine caused a change.

Choose a screen workflow only when the phone alone is not enough

DeX behavior changes across supported devices and software. Samsung’s guidance for newer workspace behavior discusses Android 16 and One UI 8 and identifies supported tablets and Z TriFold; consult the current workspace guide rather than generalizing compatibility from another Galaxy model.

Test changes and troubleshoot unexpected behavior
- Check the feature on your device. Open Settings and search for “Modes and Routines,” “Connected devices,” or “Find” if a menu path differs. Confirm the feature is available for your model, region, software, and account.
- Change one thing at a time. Set a mode’s notification rules or create one routine with a clear trigger and action. This makes it easier to identify the setting responsible for an unexpected change.
- Verify the trigger and exceptions. If a routine does not run, review the condition it depends on and whether your device offers that condition. If a mode silences something important, revise its allowed people, apps, or alerts.
- Recheck DeX compatibility before buying a cable or display accessory. Confirm that your exact device supports the intended wired or wireless route. If the device uses a PC connection and DeX on PC is not supported, review Link to Windows instead.
- Confirm finding settings before travel. Open Samsung Find or SmartThings Find and review the relevant device and location settings while you can still access the Galaxy device.
