It is not established that Dylan Larkin will never play for the Detroit Red Wings again. Detroit said Larkin requested a trade after the 2025–26 season, while Larkin said he was recovering from an upper-body injury and wanted to return to the ice. NHL insider Frank Seravalli’s suggestion that sitting out could be “mutually beneficial” is a working theory based on anonymous sources—not a confirmed arrangement between Larkin and the team.
What Detroit and Larkin have said
In a September 18, 2026 training-camp report, Red Wings reporter Jonathan Mills said interim general manager Shawn Horcoff and Larkin addressed the trade request. Detroit said the request came after the 2025–26 season. Larkin described an upper-body injury sustained while training and said, “I got hurt in the gym working out,” adding, “I’m pushing to get healthy. I want to be out there.” Detroit Red Wings’ training-camp report
Those comments establish that a trade request and an injury were publicly discussed; they do not establish that Larkin intends to sit out indefinitely or has ruled out playing for Detroit again.
What Seravalli meant by “mutually beneficial”
In reporting dated October 1, 2026, Seravalli described a working theory that Detroit may have accommodated Larkin’s desire to sit out while he recovered, continued paying him, and kept the relationship amicable. He also reported that the team reiterated Larkin was injured and had not provided a return timeline. According to that report, Larkin had taken part in some portions of practice over the previous two-plus weeks, with little noted progress. These are reported details as of October 1, not an independent medical assessment.

Seravalli’s phrase “mutually beneficial” describes speculation about how the situation might suit both sides; it is not confirmation of a sit-out agreement. The report attributed to an unnamed executive the claim that Detroit was $1.6 million above the salary-cap floor with Larkin on the books, and quoted the executive as saying paying him for now worked for everyone. Those are attributed claims, not independently verified team figures or an official explanation from Detroit.
The same report described Larkin’s salary as $8 million. That figure is the report’s characterization and should not be treated as a verified contract cap hit or as proof of a particular agreement.

Why the trade situation sounds stuck
Seravalli’s report also quoted an unnamed rival general manager calling Detroit “unrealistic” and saying the club had “essentially asked for a younger version of Dylan Larkin back.” Another interested executive reportedly said Detroit had not defined what it wanted in return. These are anonymous executives’ descriptions of negotiations, not disclosed trade terms or an official Red Wings position.
No specific offer, return package, or destination is established in the cited reporting. The reported criticism may help explain why the trade request has not produced a publicly known deal, but it cannot show what Detroit would accept or whether a trade will happen. Will Larkin play for Detroit again?
The available statements do not answer that question. Larkin said he wanted to get healthy and play; Seravalli reported an injury, an absence without a stated return timeline, and a speculative explanation for the arrangement. None establishes that Larkin will never play for the Red Wings again, that the club and player agreed to a deliberate sit-out, or that a trade is imminent. The most accurate answer is that his future with Detroit remains unresolved.
