Telnet and SSH are protocols for terminal access; 8080 is only a network port number. A port can help identify where traffic is directed, but it does not tell you which application protocol is using it or whether its data is readable. To investigate a device, trace the path from device and service to transport, port, application protocol, and encryption.

Telnet, SSH, and port 8080 are different kinds of things

Item What it is Typical port evidence What it says about content
Telnet A terminal-oriented application protocol carried over TCP. RFC 854 describes it as a bidirectional, eight-bit byte-oriented communications facility for terminal and process communication. TCP 23 is assigned for remote user access in RFC 854. The specification does not provide a cryptographic confidentiality layer. A different port or network protection may be used in a particular deployment.
SSH A protocol suite for secure remote login and other secure network services, typically running over TCP/IP. TCP 22 is the normal listening port, but SSH can use another port. SSH transport provides encryption, server authentication, and integrity protection once security is active; SSH also defines user authentication and connection channels.
Port 8080 A TCP or UDP port number, not an application protocol. One EnOS IoT platform example maps its HTTP device service to 8080 and HTTPS to 443. The port alone does not establish the service, protocol, encryption, or readability of content.

These distinctions matter because port numbers are clues, not a reliable label for everything inside a connection. RFC 7301 explicitly addresses cases where a TCP or UDP port does not definitively identify the application protocol.

How to trace where device traffic goes

Think in layers. IP handles addressing and routing. TCP provides a reliable byte stream and uses port numbers to direct traffic to services. Application protocols such as Telnet, SSH, HTTP, or a device-specific protocol define what that stream means. SSH normally runs above TCP/IP; the phrase “SSH Transport Layer Protocol” names a component of SSH, not a replacement for TCP.

“Payload” is also relative to the layer being discussed: an IP packet carries a transport segment, a TCP segment carries application bytes, and an SSH packet can contain encrypted protocol payload. A capture may show addresses, ports, and other connection metadata while the protected application content remains unreadable. The payload is not stored “at port 8080”; a port is a field used for traffic demultiplexing.

  1. Identify the device and interface. Record the model, firmware, relevant configuration, and whether the traffic is incoming or outgoing. A listening service and an outbound connection are different situations.
  2. Find the service. Check the device’s supported administration interface or service configuration to see what is listening or initiating the connection.
  3. Read the transport and port. Determine whether the traffic uses TCP or UDP and note the port. Treat the number as a lead, not a protocol identification.
  4. Confirm the application protocol. Use configuration, a protocol handshake, or protocol-aware inspection where available. Do not identify HTTP, SSH, or another protocol from the port alone.
  5. Check protection and exposure. Establish whether SSH, TLS, or another security layer protects the application data, and whether the service needs to be reachable from the network it is on.
  6. Reduce unnecessary access. Disable or restrict services the device does not need, using its supported administration procedure.

Can someone read what is sent over port 8080?

Not from the port number alone. If a service uses plaintext HTTP, application content may be visible to an observer who can capture the traffic. If the connection is protected by HTTPS/TLS, the application data is encrypted in transit, although connection metadata such as addresses and ports may remain visible. An EnOS IoT platform documents HTTP on 8080 and HTTPS on 443 as its own service mapping; that example is not a universal rule for other devices or hosts.

SSH likewise protects its protocol payload after encryption is active. RFC 4253 describes SSH as a protocol for secure remote login and other secure network services over an insecure network, with encryption, server authentication, and integrity protection. The port does not create those protections: they come from the protocol and its configuration.

What the port numbers can—and cannot—tell you

Telnet on TCP 23

TCP 23 is the assigned server port for remote user access in RFC 854, but services can be configured differently. Finding port 23 is evidence to investigate, not proof that a particular device is running Telnet; confirming the service requires configuration or protocol-level evidence.

SSH on TCP 22

TCP 22 is SSH’s conventional listening port, not an immutable requirement. SSH may listen elsewhere, so a scan or log that shows another port does not by itself rule SSH in or out. The architecture separates transport security, user authentication, and connection channels for functions such as login, commands, or forwarding.

Port 8080

8080 is commonly used by particular services, but it has no universal meaning. The EnOS example associates it with an HTTP device service; another product can use it for a different application or configure a protected protocol. Confirm what is configured and what protocol is actually exchanged before deciding whether content is exposed.

Check which services a device actually exposes

Device defaults vary by model, firmware, and configuration. The UK National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) warns that nonessential running services increase a device’s attack surface and recommends identifying which services can be disabled. Its guidance notes that SSH and Telnet may both be enabled on a device out of the box, so do not assume either is absent or enabled without checking the device.

Managed platforms can also map multiple protocols and security arrangements across their own ports. For example, AWS documents combinations involving MQTT, HTTPS, WebSocket Secure, ports, and—in some cases—ALPN, as well as TLS 1.2 and 1.3 support for its IoT service. Those details describe AWS’s service, not a general mapping for arbitrary devices. Use the documentation for the platform or device in question rather than transferring another provider’s port map.
