A Raspberry Pi can be the better choice if you want a configurable media center for your own video collection and are willing to set it up. It is not a direct Chromecast replacement: a Pi running Kodi or LibreELEC is a DIY project, while Chromecast and Google TV devices are dedicated HDMI streamers with automatic over-the-air updates.

When a Raspberry Pi is the better choice

Choose a Pi-based setup when your priority is organizing and playing local media, customizing the interface, and controlling the software yourself. Kodi is available for Raspberry Pi, and LibreELEC offers Raspberry Pi images designed to run Kodi as a media center. See LibreELEC’s Raspberry Pi downloads and Kodi’s Raspberry Pi downloads for platform and image information.

This approach suits someone who does not mind choosing compatible hardware, installing an operating system, and configuring the system. The Pi board is the foundation of that project, not a ready-to-use streaming stick. You may also need storage, power, HDMI connectivity, and possibly an enclosure or input device; check what is included with any specific board or bundle rather than assuming it is a complete kit.

How it differs from a Chromecast

A Chromecast or Google TV device is made to connect to a TV over HDMI and operate as a dedicated streaming device. Google’s specifications describe HDMI output and automatic over-the-air updates: Google’s Chromecast and Google TV device specifications. A Raspberry Pi gives you more control over the software and local-media setup, but you assemble and maintain that setup yourself.

What Raspberry Pi model you need for video

Video capability depends on the Pi generation, memory configuration, file, and software. LibreELEC’s hardware guide says Raspberry Pi 4 and 5 have native HEVC hardware decoding in its supported Raspberry Pi group; older models rely on software decoding and have greater practical limits. The guide discusses HEVC playback up to 4K on Pi 4 and 5 under stated conditions, and notes memory constraints for 1 GB variants. These are LibreELEC- and release-specific support claims, not a guarantee for every file or setup. Check the LibreELEC Raspberry Pi hardware guidance for your exact model and software release before choosing a board for a particular format or resolution.

Why a Pi may not replace your streaming apps

Do not buy a Pi expecting it to behave like a certified Chromecast receiver or to offer the same official subscription-app experience. LibreELEC’s release notes discuss Widevine libraries for protected services such as Netflix and Prime Video, which points to a DRM dependency and possible configuration work—not proof that a named service has an officially supported Kodi app or will play reliably on every Pi. See LibreELEC’s Omega 12.2 release notes.

If a particular subscription service is essential, verify its current support and playback requirements for the precise device and software version before committing. The sources available here do not establish service-by-service parity between a Pi and Google’s streaming devices.

How to decide before you buy

  1. List what you watch. Separate files stored locally from services you expect to stream or cast.
  2. Check service support. For every essential subscription app or casting feature, confirm support for the specific device and software you plan to use; do not infer it from Widevine support alone.
  3. Match the board to your media. Use LibreELEC’s hardware page to check the exact Pi model, memory configuration, codecs, and resolution you need.
  4. Price a complete setup. Include the board and any storage, power, HDMI connection, enclosure, or input device you need. No current board or streamer prices or bundle contents are established here.
  5. Choose the level of involvement you want. If installing and maintaining a media-center system sounds useful, the Pi route offers flexibility. If you want dedicated streaming hardware and automatic updates, a Chromecast or Google TV device is the more direct fit.
