Thiele–Small parameters are measurements of a loudspeaker driver’s electrical and mechanical behavior. They help predict how that driver will work with an enclosure, particularly in the bass—but no single number identifies the “best” driver or guarantees high-fidelity sound. Enclosure volume, bass target, usable frequency range, crossover, and intended use all matter.
What are Thiele–Small parameters?
Thiele–Small parameters are a set of electromechanical characteristics used to model a loudspeaker driver, especially at low frequencies. Manufacturers publish them so designers can compare drivers and calculate how a driver and enclosure are likely to behave together. They are inputs to a system design, not a complete description of how a finished speaker will sound.
A useful design process starts with the intended system: define its target response and application, calculate the driver characteristics that suit those goals, choose a candidate driver, and evaluate its usable range. The design then has to account for the enclosure, other drivers, and crossover filters as a connected system.
How do the parameters help with enclosure choice?
Driver parameters help estimate whether a particular driver can meet a low-frequency target in a proposed enclosure. Enclosure volume and the driver’s characteristics interact, so a value that looks attractive in isolation may not suit the desired bass response, cabinet size, or application.

Total Q can help frame enclosure selection, but the ranges sometimes used as rules of thumb are not absolute. Other driver parameters and the intended system matter too. Treat such ranges as starting points for investigation, not as a substitute for modeling the complete driver-and-enclosure combination. A driver-selection guide from Parts Express likewise presents total Q as one consideration rather than a universal decision rule.
Why one design’s specifications are not universal rules
A patent describing a particular sealed high-fidelity design sets an enclosure volume below 300 liters and specifies ranges for compliance volume, system compliance ratio, reference efficiency, and total system quality. It also discusses candidate professional bass drivers from 15 to 21 inches and a target low-frequency design. Those are criteria for the patent’s proposed design—not generally applicable requirements, nor independent comparative test results. Read the patent record for the design’s specific context.

- Fitment: KEMIMOTO speaker box enclosure fits 6.5 inch speakers, and it can be mounted on 9.56inch diameter circular flat surface, such as UTVs, ATVs, Cars, Boats, Trunks, Trailers, etc. Besides, it is compatible with Can-Am Maverick X3, Sport, Trail, compatible with Polaris Ranger, RZR, compatible with Pioneer, Talon, etc. Fits 3.15-inch speaker height
- Speakers Retrofitting or Moving: KEMIMOTO utv speaker pods are for retrofitting or moving speakers. You can add new speakers or move existing stereo system to any 243mm (9.56inch) diameter circular flat surface you want, such as utv roof, dash, door, etc
- Pre-drilled Design: The 6.5-inch speaker box enclosures are pre-drilled with 5.7inch diameter hole and 0.48inch width flange edge, which helps you save a lot of time on drilling and installing. There are four 6mm holes for speaker installing and six 7mm holes for pods installing, six 16mm self-tapping screws are also included, you can decide if the holes and screws will be used
- Sealed Pad: Different from other products on the market, KEMIMOTO 6.5 speaker box pods are designed with a sealed pad, it can help speakers to be mounted tightly and prevent sound loss, which will give you better user experience and sound enjoyment
- Strong Material: KEMIMOTO universal angled speaker pods are made of superior PP material that is sturdy, shockproof and not easy to break. A single purchase delivers long-lasting use, so you won't need frequent replacements
The practical lesson is to evaluate the driver, cabinet, bass target, usable upper frequency range, and crossover together. A driver selected only because one parameter appears favorable may not work well in the finished system.
How enclosure design connects to the rest of the speaker
Choosing a bass driver and enclosure is only part of the design. The driver’s midrange behavior helps establish its usable upper range and whether beaming becomes a concern. The designer also has to match other drivers and select crossover filters that integrate them across their shared range. A cabinet choice that addresses bass alone does not settle those other system decisions.

What does “high fidelity” mean?
High fidelity can refer to measurable behavior, such as how accurately a system reproduces a recording, but the intended reference matters as well. In a February 1968 article in HiFi/Stereo Review, James Goodfriend discussed stereo reproduction through six listening dimensions:
- Pitch: The balance of low and high notes in relation to the midrange.
- Dynamics: The range of loudness and the changes in level.
- Depth: The impression of front-to-back space.
- Directionality: The apparent location of sounds.
- Ambiance: The acoustic environment suggested by the recording.
- Timbre: The tone color associated with an instrument’s harmonics and noise.
Goodfriend also noted that listeners can disagree about what the system should reproduce: the live performance from a listener’s particular seat, the sound captured by microphones, or the sound the producer intended. These categories are historical explanatory ideas, not a current standard or a measured ranking of speakers. They help clarify why technical accuracy and a listener’s reference for “the real sound” are connected but not identical questions. The article appeared in the February 1968 issue of HiFi/Stereo Review.

In a statement reported by Lenard Audio as dating to October 2014, Dr. Floyd E. Toole, identified there as Vice President of Acoustical Engineering at Harman International Industries, Inc., emphasized neutrality: “Loudspeakers are the single most important element. They influence the art as it is being created. And in that process loudspeakers need to be neutral. If they are not neutral then they become part of the art.” The quotation is attributed here to Lenard Audio’s report. Read Lenard Audio’s report.

A practical way to use Thiele–Small data
- Set the system goal. Specify the low-frequency target, acceptable enclosure size, and intended application before comparing drivers.
- Compare complete parameter sets. Use the driver’s published data to model its interaction with candidate enclosures; do not make the choice from one parameter alone.
- Check the driver beyond the bass. Assess its usable upper range and midrange behavior, including whether beaming may constrain the design.
- Plan the whole system. Match the remaining drivers and choose crossover filters as part of the same design, rather than treating the enclosure as the finished answer.
