CBS Sports writer Shehan Jeyarajah picked Alabama -6; the two sampled sportsbook lines were shorter, at -5 and -5.5. Those are pregame snapshots, not live odds, and may be stale or unavailable after kickoff.

Alabama visits Mississippi State on Saturday, October 3, 2026, at Davis Wade Stadium in Starkville. The SEC schedule lists a noon ET kickoff on ABC; Mississippi State’s game center gives the local start as 11 a.m. and calls the event a Stripe Out. Prediction and matchup case
Pick: Alabama to win, with the spread depending on the price. The pregame case for Alabama rests on its reported scoring and passing production. CBS reported that sophomore quarterback Keelon Russell threw for 365 yards and four touchdowns in a 49-18 win over South Carolina. CBS also said he had 685 passing yards, seven touchdowns and a 77% completion rate across wins over Florida State and South Carolina.
Mississippi State’s case is substantial: it was also unbeaten, had home field, and had just rallied to beat No. 19 Missouri, 31-24. CBS reported that quarterback Kamario Taylor threw for 360 yards and three touchdowns in that win and averaged 344.3 yards of offense per game. Both teams were 4-0 entering the game, according to CBS’s October 2 pregame preview.

FanDuel Research’s four-game snapshot listed Alabama at 48.0 points scored and 20.3 allowed per game, and Mississippi State at 43.0 scored and 21.0 allowed. Those figures are that outlet’s pregame snapshot, not independently verified season totals. The opposing quarterback performances make a close, offense-led game plausible, but the available numbers alone do not establish that the total is a sure over.

How to read the spread difference
At the sampled prices, BetMGM showed Alabama laying five points and FanDuel showed 5.5. That half-point matters around a potential six-point margin: CBS writer Shehan Jeyarajah selected Alabama -6, which is a published opinion, not a guarantee or a price all readers could obtain. Compare the exact line and its price rather than treating all three figures as interchangeable.

Total and moneyline considerations
Both sampled books showed a 60.5 total, though only FanDuel’s snapshot included the -110 price on each side. The FanDuel moneyline favored Alabama at -196, with Mississippi State at +162. A spread, total and moneyline express different wagers; compare the price and potential payout, and do not infer an outcome from the price alone.

Mississippi State’s official game center records the all-time series as Alabama 87 wins, Mississippi State 18 wins and three ties. That history shows a long-running Alabama advantage, but it does not decide a game between two unbeaten 2026 teams.
