The better choice depends on the job you need done, the limits you can live with, and whether you already pay for Google or Microsoft services. This is a comparison of five consumer-facing products—not their developer APIs or enterprise agent-building platforms—and their advertised features, not a controlled performance test.
How to compare five unlike offers
The phrase “three pricing models” is a useful way to sort these products, not an official industry classification. Their plans do not include identical features, and a monthly price alone does not tell you which is the better value. Compare the extra cost you would actually incur, the features and usage limits on the plan offered in your region, and whether the product fits your existing workflow.
| Pricing pattern | Platforms | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Free access plus individual paid tiers | ChatGPT and Claude | Which models and features are included, how limits work, and whether your actual use justifies upgrading. |
| AI bundled with a wider productivity or storage subscription | Google Gemini and Microsoft Copilot | Eligibility, the apps and storage included, and whether the bundle adds value to services you already use. |
| Research-led tiers organized around search and access | Perplexity | How much Pro Search and advanced-model access you need, and the limits on your plan. |
These groupings simplify a complicated market. In particular, Microsoft access depends on which Microsoft 365 plan and account you have; Copilot Chat availability and paid Copilot features in Microsoft apps are not interchangeable.
What each platform is positioned to do
ChatGPT: a broad set of tools, including browser-based agent tasks
OpenAI lists Free, Go, Plus, and Pro for individuals. Its plan page describes access to features such as reasoning, deep research, scheduled tasks, custom GPTs, and ChatGPT Work, with availability varying by tier and limits applying. The official plan information reviewed for this comparison did not establish prices, so check the offer shown for your account rather than assuming a particular monthly cost.
#1 Best Overall
OpenAI’s July 17, 2025 announcement describes ChatGPT agent mode as using tools to handle multi-step tasks, with visible narration, connector access, and the ability to interrupt or take over the browser. OpenAI says users must take over the browser to log in before actions on those sites. The company wrote: “You can interrupt and take control of the browser whenever needed, ensuring tasks remain aligned with your goals.” That is a description of the product’s intended controls, not independent proof that an agent will complete a task correctly or safely.
Claude: a choice of usage tiers, but not a fixed message allowance
Anthropic offers Free, Pro, and Max for consumers. Its current plan information says Max starts at $100 per month and offers a choice of fivefold or twentyfold Pro usage, alongside higher output limits. Those multipliers describe usage relative to Pro; they do not promise a universal number of messages. Anthropic says limits can depend on the model, task, and features. Its help information describes rolling five-hour session limits and additional weekly limits. Pro is offered with monthly and annual billing; Max with monthly billing.
If you are repeatedly running into limits, compare the tier and billing option available to you with the work you actually do. Do not treat the Max multipliers as a direct comparison with another platform’s message allowance or as a guarantee of uninterrupted use.
Gemini: an AI subscription bundled with Google services
Google lists Google AI Pro at $19.99 per month on the official subscriptions page reviewed on October 3, 2026. The listed plan includes higher access to capable Gemini models and features such as Deep Research, Gemini in Gmail and Docs, and 5 TB of cloud storage. Google says the account must be a personal Google Account managed by the subscriber; age, regional, and feature-availability conditions apply. Usage limits may depend on prompt complexity, features, and conversation length.
The bundle is most relevant if you use Google apps and need the included storage. Storage or app access you would not otherwise use should not be counted as a cash saving.
Microsoft Copilot: first check what your Microsoft 365 plan already includes
Microsoft describes Copilot Chat as a web-grounded AI assistant available at no additional cost with eligible Microsoft 365 plans. Custom organizational agents may be metered. Paid Microsoft 365 Copilot features integrate with apps including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Teams. The prices in the Microsoft plan information reviewed here are for business plans, not a household or general individual comparison; they should not be used as a consumer price quote.
Rank #3
For personal use, check the terms of your own Microsoft 365 Personal or Family subscription and account. Whether Copilot Chat is included, and what additional Copilot features are available, depends on the eligible plan and current terms.
Perplexity: a search-centered option with linked sources
Perplexity lists Standard (Free), Pro, and Max individual plans. Its help information describes Pro as offering extended access to Pro Search, advanced models, image and video generation, and increased file and attachment analysis limits, subject to limits. Perplexity describes Pro Search as a multi-step search across web, academic, finance, file, and other sources, followed by a synthesis with direct links.
The current individual Pro dollar price was not established in the official information reviewed for this comparison. Check the current price and feature limits shown at signup. Perplexity’s plan guidance was last updated September 2, 2026, and its Pro Search page July 21, 2026; details can change.
Which one should you choose?
Start with the task and the cost beyond subscriptions you already have. Use these as ways to evaluate the offers, not as claims that one service has been independently proved best at a task.
- You need web research with visible source links: try Perplexity’s free experience and see whether its linked synthesis suits the way you verify information.
- Your documents and routine work are in Microsoft 365: check whether eligible Copilot Chat is already available through your plan before paying for an additional service.
- You use Gmail, Docs, and Drive daily: compare Google AI Pro’s price and included services with the features and storage you would actually use.
- You want browser-based, multi-step assistance: assess ChatGPT agent on a low-risk task you can check yourself, and stay ready to supervise or take over.
- You keep hitting usage limits: compare the Claude tier’s stated limits and billing options against your own pattern of use rather than relying on a fixed message-count expectation.
For ChatGPT and Perplexity, the official information reviewed here did not establish an individual plan price suitable for a price comparison. Prices and eligibility vary or may change, so compare the checkout offer for your location. The same caution applies to plan features: confirm that the model or tool you want is actually included in your region and tier.

There is no directly comparable independent benchmark here covering all five services on current consumer plans. Advertised tools and vendor demonstrations can help you identify what to try, but they do not establish that one assistant is more accurate, reliable, or capable overall.

Best Value
Two broader studies offer context, not a product ranking. A July 2026 working paper by Jennifer Zou reports results from a weighted sample of 1,999 U.S. adult AI-assistant users: ChatGPT was the primary assistant for 58% of the sample and Gemini for 25%; Claude accounted for a third of coding tasks despite a 7% overall share. These are findings from that study and sample, not a live market-share census or a head-to-head performance test.
The 2026 AI Agent Index reports that 135 of 240 safety-related fields across its indexed systems lacked public information. That aggregate is not a score for these five consumer products. The index says guardrails are more commonly described for consumer-facing agents than for builder platforms, but the presence of described safeguards does not make an agent risk-free.
Use agents with human oversight
A chatbot that drafts a response and an agent that can act in a browser are not the same kind of assistance. Multi-step actions can affect accounts, files, or other software, so treat an agent’s output as something to review—not as a guarantee of unattended completion. For any action with real consequences, supervise the steps, verify the result, and use the available controls to interrupt or take over when needed. The advertised controls differ by product and task.
