The next move depends on whether company earnings grow enough to justify the prices investors are paying—and on how capital flows, investment and global conditions affect that calculation. The useful answer is conditional, not a point forecast.
Why earnings and valuation have to be read together
A rising market is not, by itself, proof that shares are fairly priced; nor does a high valuation automatically mean prices must fall. Valuation asks what investors are paying for expected future earnings. If earnings meet or exceed those expectations, elevated prices may be easier to support. If earnings disappoint, the same valuation can leave less room for error.
Mirae Asset Sharekhan’s November 2025 commentary discussed earnings alongside market performance and volatility. It is a dated assessment, not a live account of market conditions. The commentary’s broad relevance is that earnings delivery matters when judging whether market pricing can hold up; it does not establish what companies have since delivered.
Is India’s valuation premium justified?
Valuation is relative as well as absolute. An October 2025 Mint editorial excerpt reproduced by the University of Jammu argued that India’s valuation premium over other emerging markets depends in part on its relative growth and earnings prospects. That is an opinion about what could justify a premium, not a current valuation comparison or a verified measure of how large any premium is today.
#1 Best Overall
The question for investors is therefore not simply whether Indian shares look expensive in isolation. It is whether the growth priced into them is likely to materialize—and how that outlook compares with other markets. If earnings expectations weaken while prices remain demanding, the balance becomes less comfortable. If growth prospects hold up and earnings follow, a premium may be more defensible. Neither scenario is assured by the argument itself.
How domestic and foreign flows can shape demand
Investor flows affect the supply of capital seeking exposure to equities. Domestic buying can support demand, while foreign portfolio flows can add to it or reverse direction. But flows are one influence on prices, not a substitute for earnings or a reliable standalone forecast of where a market will go.

A July 2026 excerpt on the Professional Development Committee publication page discussed FY26 flows, but the reported totals were not independently verified against primary exchange or depository data. They should not be treated here as established current figures. Mirae Asset Sharekhan’s November 2025 commentary also discussed institutional buying, but that historical reference does not establish present flows.
Could capex support a rebound?
Morgan Stanley Wealth Management’s Global Investment Committee said Indian equities, pressured in 2025 by earnings-revision downgrades, could rebound in 2026 if strong capex resumes. The key word is if: this was a conditional institutional outlook, not confirmation that capex has resumed strongly or that a rebound has happened.

Capex can matter because investment activity may support demand and future earnings. But the chain from spending to company profits to market returns is not automatic. Execution, the sectors receiving investment and the wider economic backdrop all affect whether capex translates into the earnings investors expect.
Why sector signals may not tell the whole market story
Conditions can vary sharply across industries. Fortune India’s April 5, 2026 coverage of Indian IT firms described macroeconomic uncertainty and AI adoption alongside analyst expectations for company-level growth. That is useful sector context, but it is not evidence that the broad equity market faces the same outlook. An industry’s prospects can diverge from both the wider economy and other sectors.
The Institute of Cost Accountants of India’s March 2024 discussion of equity-market drivers is historical background, not current market evidence. Taken together, sector coverage and broad market commentary are best read at their proper scope: company or industry expectations cannot, on their own, establish a market-wide direction.
What to watch as the outlook develops
- Earnings versus expectations: whether reported results support or undermine the growth investors appear to be pricing in.
- Relative valuation: whether India’s growth and earnings prospects continue to justify the premium argued for in the October 2025 editorial, rather than assuming that premium is a current measured fact.
- Capital flows: whether domestic demand and foreign portfolio activity reinforce one another or move in opposite directions; use verified, dated primary data for any specific flow totals.
- Capex execution: whether investment resumes strongly enough to support earnings, the condition in Morgan Stanley Wealth Management’s 2026 outlook.
- Global and sector conditions: whether macro uncertainty, technology shifts such as AI adoption and company-specific performance support or complicate the broader earnings picture.
These are ways to frame the competing forces, not a buy-or-sell checklist. None alone determines the outcome, and the dated commentary cited here does not provide a live market snapshot or a verified subsequent result for the 2026 capex condition.

So, what comes next?
Indian equities could find support if earnings deliver, investment strengthens and valuations remain defensible against growth prospects. They could face pressure if earnings expectations fall short, capex fails to materialize or global and sector risks weigh on results. Flows may amplify either direction, but they do not settle the question. The best-supported answer is conditional: watch what companies earn and what investors are paying for it, rather than treating a dated outlook as a forecast already borne out.
