It is a much weaker buy if you expect to purchase games digitally from Nintendo or rely on Nintendo-hosted online multiplayer: new eShop purchases ended in 2023, and Nintendo online play and other online-communication features ended in 2024.
For a used 3DS, the deciding factors are the games you want, the console’s exact model and condition, and the price of comparable local listings. Physical game cards still work, but a secondhand console is aging hardware, not a way to restore the system’s former digital storefront or online services.

Who should buy a 3DS in 2026?
A 3DS can make sense if you have a clear reason to own one: a particular game, DS cartridge compatibility, local multiplayer, StreetPass, or its distinctive dual-screen and stereoscopic 3D experience. Its value is personal and library-specific; it is not a general-purpose replacement for a current handheld.
- Good fit: You want games available on 3DS or DS, prefer physical cards, or value local features and the original hardware experience.
- Less suitable: You expect to browse Nintendo’s 3DS eShop for new purchases, play Nintendo-hosted online multiplayer, or buy based on an assumed digital library attached to the console.
Nintendo discontinued the system in September 2020, according to a 2024 peer-reviewed study by Read and co-authors, which cites Nintendo. Can you still buy 3DS games?
Digital purchases are closed
Nintendo ended purchases of 3DS software and downloadable content through Nintendo eShop on March 27, 2023. Previously purchased games and DLC can still be redownloaded “for the foreseeable future,” according to Nintendo Support’s redownload notice. That wording is not a permanent guarantee, and it does not mean a used console includes its previous owner’s digital purchases. Do not pay extra for an assumed digital collection or count on future redownloads as your only way to access a game.
Physical cards remain an option
Nintendo’s operations manual says the card slot accepts Nintendo 3DS, DS, and DSi game cards. That makes physical games a practical route to playing compatible titles, but availability, authenticity, and prices vary by title and location. Check that the specific game you want is available as a genuine physical card and that it is compatible with the console’s region before buying.

Does online still work on 3DS?
Nintendo discontinued online play and other functionality that uses online communication for 3DS software on April 8, 2024. StreetPass and SpotPass are different
StreetPass uses local communication between nearby 3DS family systems, so Nintendo says it remains available after the online-services shutdown. SpotPass features that require online communication do not. Local functionality depends on having another compatible system nearby; the end of Nintendo’s online service does not make it an internet-based substitute.
Some named services remained online at the time of Nintendo’s notice
Nintendo identified Pokémon Bank and Poké Transporter as services that would continue online at the time it published the shutdown notice, while warning that they could also end. Treat that as a statement about the notice’s publication, not a guarantee of present or future availability. Nintendo’s notice establishes the status of Nintendo’s services; it does not establish the reliability or compatibility of third-party online networks.

Which 3DS model should you buy?
There is no universally best 3DS-family model or dependable 2026 price ranking across models and regions. Compare the particular console in front of you against your priorities rather than assuming that an XL, New model, or another variant is automatically worth a premium.
- Total local price: Compare recent sold listings for the same model and similar condition, including shipping and taxes.
- Screen and 3D preferences: Decide whether you want stereoscopic 3D and whether a larger XL screen matters to you.
- Condition: Inspect both screens, hinge, buttons, circle pad, charging port, and card slot.
- Included items: Account for a compatible charger, stylus, and battery condition.
- Region and games: Confirm the console’s region and that it suits the physical titles you intend to play.

What to check before buying a used 3DS
- Choose the games first. Make a shortlist of 3DS and DS games you want, then check whether each is available physically and compatible with the console’s region.
- Compare like with like. Look at recent sold listings in your location for the same model and similar condition. Include shipping, taxes, charger, stylus, and the seller’s return policy in the comparison.
- Inspect the hardware. Ask for clear photos of both screens, the hinge, shell, charging port, and model or serial label. If possible, test the screens, touch input, buttons, circle pad, speakers, cameras if you need them, wireless or local functions, charging, and card reading.
- Check battery and charger compatibility. Ask how well the battery holds a charge and verify the charger and battery part against the exact model and region. Do not rely on a generic “3DS compatible” description.
- Buy on the physical condition and included items. Do not pay more for an assumed previous-owner digital library or for a promise of future redownload access.
What to expect from aging hardware
Battery life is one point to examine rather than assume. Nintendo’s original 3DS manual says repeated charging reduces battery life. It identifies CTR-003 as the original model battery and WAP-002 as the adapter in that manual’s regional variant. Those references should not be generalized to every 3DS-family model or region: verify the exact console and part before purchasing a replacement or accessory. Nintendo 3DS operations manual
A used system’s cosmetic condition does not prove that its battery, hinge, controls, screens, or card slot work properly. If a seller cannot provide adequate photos or allow basic function checks, factor that uncertainty into the price and your willingness to take the risk.
