To improve Wi-Fi, first move your router to a central, elevated, open spot, then test the weak area again. If that does not fix the problem, find out whether the cause is distance, barriers, interference, a device limit, network congestion, or a slow internet connection. Add a mesh point or range extender only if you have a coverage gap—and place it where it can still receive a strong connection.

How to improve your Wi-Fi speeds: diagnose the problem first

A slow connection does not always mean a weak Wi-Fi signal. The cause might be the room’s distance from the router, walls or other barriers, a device’s capabilities, many active devices, or the internet connection coming into your home. Google’s speed and performance troubleshooting guide lists these as factors to consider.

  1. Identify the pattern. Note whether the issue affects one room, the whole home, one device, or mainly a particular time of day.
  2. Compare two locations. Test the affected device near the router and then in the problem location. If performance improves nearby, distance or barriers may be contributing.
  3. Check the internet connection. Run your router or ISP’s speed test if available. If several devices remain slow even near the router, the issue may be the internet service rather than wireless coverage. Contact your ISP if results are below the service expectation for your plan.

These comparisons help distinguish a local Wi-Fi problem from a connection problem; they do not by themselves establish a guaranteed speed or improvement.

Where to place your Wi-Fi devices

Router placement is the first no-cost change to try. Put the router as close as practical to the center of the area that needs coverage, raise it off the floor, and keep it in the open rather than inside a cabinet. Leave space around its top and sides. Walls, cabinets, and other physical barriers can weaken a Wi-Fi signal, as Google Fiber explains in its Wi-Fi speed guidance.

After moving the router, test the same device in the same problem location. Homes differ in layout and building materials, so there is no universal placement that guarantees a particular speed increase.

Check the device, frequency band, and network load

If only one device struggles, its age or Wi-Fi capabilities may be a factor. A newer router cannot give an older client support for Wi-Fi standards that the client does not have. If performance drops when many devices are active, network traffic may be part of the problem; compare results at a quieter time as well.

Wi-Fi bands also involve a range-versus-speed trade-off. The FCC consumer guidance describes 5 GHz as faster but shorter-range than 2.4 GHz. The better choice depends on how far the device is from the router and what stands between them; neither band is best for every room.

Troubleshoot slow internet caused by interference

Nearby electronics can contribute to wireless interference. Google recommends enabling channel auto-switching where that option is available, and moving, unplugging, or disabling nearby electronics when practical. Change one thing at a time and retest; effects vary by home. See Google’s wireless interference troubleshooting guidance.

Choose an extender or mesh point for a coverage gap

If the router works well nearby but a particular area remains unreliable, extra coverage hardware may help. An extender is generally an option for a localized gap; mesh can suit broader, multi-room coverage. In either case, the added device needs a good connection back to the router or mesh network. Putting an extender at the far edge of a dead zone can leave its upstream connection weak even when your device shows a strong signal to the extender.

Option Useful when Placement or limitation
Range extender A smaller, localized coverage gap needs attention. Place it where it still receives a usable signal from the router, not at the edge of the dead zone. See Google Fiber’s extender placement advice.
Mesh Wi-Fi point You need coverage across a broader area or multiple rooms. Points need reliable links to one another. Google’s guidance for its own systems suggests placing points about one to two rooms apart; this is product-specific advice, not a universal rule for every brand. Check model compatibility and use available system diagnostics. See Google’s overview of Google Wifi and its mesh test guide.

More hardware is not automatically better: a poorly placed extender or mesh point can retain a weak connection to the rest of the network. Compatibility, home layout, building materials, and whether the system uses wired or wireless links between points all matter.

Use Ethernet for a stationary device

For a desktop computer, TV, or console that stays in one place, a direct Ethernet cable may provide a faster, steadier connection without adding that device’s traffic to Wi-Fi. The FCC consumer guidance says a direct Ethernet connection between a router and an internet-accessing device “will provide the highest speeds and alleviate Wi-Fi congestion issues.” Ethernet helps the wired device; it does not extend wireless coverage to other rooms.

When a Wi-Fi change will not fix the problem

If performance is poor on multiple devices even close to the router, check the internet connection and ask your ISP about results that fall below your plan’s service expectation. Repositioning a router or adding coverage points cannot repair an ISP-side fault or make a slow internet plan faster. Likewise, replacing a router will not upgrade the Wi-Fi capabilities of an older device.
