There is no official rule that Pacific storm names must repeat a syllable. Polo, Nolo and Lala look like a matching set, but they come from two different naming lists: Polo is on the Eastern North Pacific list, while Nolo and Lala are on the Central North Pacific list.

Why do Polo, Nolo and Lala sound alike?

They share a compact, repeated-syllable pattern, but the resemblance does not establish a naming convention. The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) describes general criteria for choosing tropical-cyclone names, including short length, ease of pronunciation, suitability across languages and distinctiveness. Its guidance does not identify repeated syllables as a rule, and its published list pages do not explain the individual origins of Polo, Nolo or Lala.

The names also do not come from one Pacific list. The WMO’s tropical cyclone naming fact sheet, dated 24 November 2023, explains that names are organized through regional tropical-cyclone bodies, with lists proposed by member National Meteorological and Hydrological Services. Different basins have separate systems.

Which Pacific lists include these names?

Name Basin and list How the list is used
Polo Eastern North Pacific; appears in the 2026 column The six lists are used in rotation, according to the WMO’s Eastern North Pacific Names page, last updated 5 May 2026.
Nolo Central North Pacific One of four lists used sequentially: after a list reaches its last name, use continues at the top of the next, according to the WMO’s Central North Pacific Names page, last updated 8 December 2025.
Lala Central North Pacific Uses the same four-list sequence as Nolo, according to the WMO’s Central North Pacific Names page, last updated 8 December 2025.

These are regional naming systems, not one master Pacific roster. The Eastern North Pacific page also notes that supplemental names replaced the Greek alphabet beginning in 2021.

What are storm names for?

Names make warnings and public discussion easier to communicate, and help people distinguish storms—especially when several systems are active. They are a practical label, not a description of a storm’s strength or a tribute to a particular person. The WMO fact sheet states: “It is important to note that tropical cyclones are not named after individuals.”

“Tropical cyclone” is the broad term. “Hurricane” is used regionally, so the familiar phrase “Pacific hurricane names” can cover names from different Pacific basins even though their lists are maintained separately.
