A slow laptop startup is easiest to fix when you first identify where the delay occurs: before sign-in, while signing in, or after the desktop appears. Note whether the laptop runs Windows or macOS and record its model. A laptop that eventually starts is a different problem from one that freezes, crashes, shows an error, or will not boot.
First, pinpoint the delay
Watch one full startup and note the stage that takes longest. Is the screen blank or showing a logo before sign-in? Does the delay happen while your account loads? Or does the desktop appear promptly, but apps and files remain sluggish? These observations point to different causes: startup apps and services, login items, a selected startup disk, connected accessories, or general resource pressure.
- Slow but successful startup: Use the routine checks below for your operating system.
- Freeze, crash, error, or no boot: Treat this as a startup failure, not ordinary performance tuning. Microsoft groups Windows startup problems into crashes or bug checks, no-boot situations, and freezes; see its Windows startup guidance. For a Mac that will not start normally, use Apple’s startup troubleshooting guidance.
Keep a short note of changes and restart after relevant tests. That makes it easier to identify which change affected the delay.
Fix a slow startup in Windows
Microsoft notes that apps running at startup can slow boot time and increase background usage. Work through the built-in checks first; no single step is guaranteed to fix every slow startup. See Microsoft’s startup-app guidance for the relevant Windows settings.

Disable only unnecessary startup apps
- Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager.
- Select Startup apps.
- Review the listed apps and disable only those you do not need to launch automatically. Leave unfamiliar or essential items enabled until you know what they do.
- Restart and check whether the stage you noted has improved.
Disabling an app’s automatic launch does not necessarily uninstall it; you can still open it when needed. Avoid turning off everything indiscriminately, since some apps or device utilities may provide features you rely on.
Check storage, updates, security, and installed apps
- Free disk space: Check available storage and use Windows Storage Sense or cleanup tools to remove temporary files. Low disk space can reduce performance.
- Install updates: Check for available Windows updates and, where appropriate, optional driver updates.
- Scan for malware: Run a scan with Windows Security.
- Remove unused apps: Uninstall software you no longer use rather than leaving it installed and potentially running background components.
These are sensible first-line checks, not a promise that any particular one will shorten startup.

Look for a real resource bottleneck
In Task Manager, review CPU, memory, disk, and startup-app usage. High activity that continues after sign-in may mean the laptop is slow to become usable even when Windows itself has loaded. Use the displayed resource activity to guide the next step; do not end unfamiliar processes just to make the numbers fall.
Use a clean boot to test for a background conflict
If the delay persists and you suspect a third-party service or startup app, Microsoft’s clean-boot process can help isolate it. Follow the current clean-boot instructions carefully.

- Open System Configuration and select the Services tab.
- Check Hide all Microsoft services before selecting Disable all. Hiding Microsoft services helps prevent disabling services Windows needs.
- Disable startup apps as directed in the clean-boot workflow, then restart and test the startup.
- If the delay improves, re-enable items systematically to find the conflict. Microsoft suggests testing half the items at a time to reduce the number of restarts needed.
- When testing is complete, restore normal startup using Microsoft’s instructions.
On a work- or school-managed laptop, network policies or device rules may affect these steps. Follow your IT department’s guidance instead of changing managed settings.
Fix a slow startup on a Mac
On a Mac, first distinguish a delay that occurs while macOS is starting from one that begins as your account loads. Login items, the selected startup disk, and connected accessories are different checks for different symptoms.

Test login items when the delay happens as your account loads
- Open Apple menu > System Settings > General > Login Items & Extensions.
- Record the current items, then remove them as a test.
- Restart and see whether the login-related delay changes.
- If it improves, add items back one at a time, restarting between tests, to identify the item associated with the delay.

Check the startup disk if the delay occurs before login
If the Mac is delayed before sign-in, or displays a flashing question mark, check that the intended disk is selected at Apple menu > System Settings > General > Startup Disk. A progress bar beneath the Apple logo can indicate that macOS is checking the disk. Apple describes these cases in its Mac startup troubleshooting guidance.

Test connected accessories
Disconnect USB, USB-C, Thunderbolt, and other accessories, then restart. If the delay goes away, reconnect devices one at a time, restarting between tests. If one device brings the delay back, consult that device’s manufacturer.

Repeated freezes, crashes, errors, or a laptop that cannot reach its normal sign-in screen call for the operating system’s recovery or support path—not just startup-app cleanup. For Windows, start with Microsoft’s startup troubleshooting options. Before choosing a reset or reinstall, back up important files and read what that specific option keeps or removes: Windows recovery options differ in their effects on files, apps, and settings. Reinstalling from installation media may remove data; review Microsoft’s Windows recovery options before proceeding. A recovery USB is a fallback if normal recovery does not work, not a routine way to make startup faster.
For a Mac that fails to start, follow Apple’s startup troubleshooting steps rather than repeatedly changing login settings.
When could the laptop itself be the limit?
Software cleanup may not materially improve an older laptop if its hardware is the constraint. The right hardware advice depends on the exact model, its current configuration, and a diagnosed limitation. Without those details, recommending a RAM or SSD upgrade would be guesswork. Identify the bottleneck before considering a hardware change.
