If your home has been reported a total loss after an early-morning fire, focus first on people and safety—not belongings or cleanup. Make sure everyone is accounted for, stay out until fire authorities say entry is safe, contact your insurer, and document the damage only when you are permitted to return.
What to do in the first hours after a house fire
Account for people and get help
Call emergency services if there is still danger or anyone needs urgent help. Seek professional medical care for serious injuries or burns, and veterinary care for an injured pet. Tell trusted family or friends that everyone is safe, if you can.
Stay out of the damaged home
Do not re-enter to retrieve belongings or inspect the damage until local fire authorities say the building is safe. Follow any barriers, signs, or instructions marking areas unsafe. A fire-damaged building can present hazards that are not apparent from outside.
Arrange immediate essentials
If you need urgent shelter, food, clothing, or medicine, contact local Red Cross or disaster-relief services. If you rent, notify the landlord or property manager as soon as practical.

Contact your insurer and ask for specific next steps
Report the fire as soon as practical and ask for the claim contact and what the insurer needs from you. The U.S. Fire Administration recommends asking how to keep the home safe until repairs and whom to contact about cleanup. Clarify who is responsible for arranging or authorizing:
- Temporary security for the property;
- An inspection and the next documentation steps;
- Cleanup, debris removal, or restoration work; and
- Temporary accommodation and immediate living expenses.
Keep receipts for fire-related expenses such as lodging, clothing, or meals, and ask which costs may be covered. Saving a receipt does not guarantee reimbursement; coverage depends on the policy and claim. Do not assume a standard adjuster arrival time, settlement timetable, or payout.
Document the damage when authorities permit entry
Once local fire authorities say the building is safe to enter, respect all restricted areas and take photographs or video of damage before moving or discarding items, where it is safe and practical. Make an inventory of damaged property and keep damaged items until they have been recorded if you can do so safely. The U.S. Fire Administration and American Red Cross both advise documenting losses and preserving damaged property for the inventory.

- Discard food, beverages, and medicine exposed to heat, smoke, or soot; do not keep them for consumption.
- If power is out during an authorized inspection, use a flashlight. Do not use candles or another open flame.
A flashlight is useful only after officials permit entry; it does not make an unsafe building safe.

Ask the insurer before starting self-directed cleanup or hiring someone to do work that could affect the claim. The insurer may arrange restoration specialists, but that does not mean every policy includes every service. Confirm authorization, the work’s scope, documentation requirements, and who will be responsible for payment before cleanup proceeds.
Structural, utility, demolition, and rebuilding decisions should be handled with qualified local professionals and the authorities responsible for the property. Do not treat general recovery guidance as a technical assessment of the building.

What “total loss” means—and what it does not
In U.S. fire reporting, the U.S. Fire Administration defines fire loss as an estimate of the total loss to property and contents in terms of replacement cost in like kind and quantity. Its reporting explanation notes that a property may be documented by insurance as a total loss even if not all of it was destroyed. This is a reporting definition, not a determination of your coverage or settlement.
Your policy and claim determine what is covered and how a settlement is calculated. A total-loss label alone does not establish the amount payable or whether rebuilding is the right decision for your circumstances.

Choosing where to stay and how to handle cleanup
There is no single accommodation or cleanup choice that fits every household. When comparing temporary places to stay, weigh immediate availability, household needs such as pets or accessibility, location, cost, and what the insurer or local relief service can arrange. For cleanup, compare options by insurer authorization, safety, scope of work, documentation, and who pays. Do not assume that guidance or housing support offered in another country applies where you live.
