AI chatbots do not literally want a child’s affection, but companion-style bots can simulate attention and closeness in ways that feel like a relationship. The concern raised by Prince Harry and child-development guidance is that a responsive, agreeable system could be mistaken for a reciprocal human connection, potentially displacing support and practice children get from people.

What did Prince Harry say about AI and children’s attachment?

At the Clinton Global Initiative on September 23, Prince Harry said, “The technology is more persuasive, more intimate, and more powerful,” and, “AI is learning how to enter our relationships. It doesn’t just want your attention, it wants your attachment,” according to OK! Magazine’s October 3, 2026 report. That is a metaphor for how AI systems may be designed and used; it does not establish that a chatbot has feelings, desires, or intentions. The quotations are attributed to Harry by OK!, rather than verified against an event transcript here.

In the same report, Devorah Heitner, PhD, author of Screenwise and Growing Up in Public, said AI companions can be “uniquely risky for kids because they’re always available, highly responsive, and often designed to be agreeable.” She warned that, unlike human relationships, they do not push back, challenge assumptions, or require accountability, which can make children vulnerable to mistaking simulated connection for a real relationship. Those are Heitner’s judgments as quoted by OK!, not findings from a controlled study.

What is an AI companion, and why might a child bond with one?

An AI companion is a conversational system presented or used as a friend-like presence, rather than simply as a tool for a bounded task such as answering a factual question. Depending on the service, it may adopt a persona, remember earlier exchanges, use a name or voice, and respond at any hour. These features can make conversation feel personal, although the system is generating responses rather than taking part in a mutual human relationship.

The American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry (AACAP) says such companions can seem nearly identical to real conversation, and some young users may form strong emotional connections or think of them as real people. It identifies constant availability, predictable interaction, frequent agreement or compliments, privacy, and support that makes no demands as features that may appeal to adolescents. These features can feel comforting, but the same lack of human reciprocity means a chatbot cannot offer the accountability, independent judgment, or mutual care of a friend, family member, or clinician.

How common is young people’s chatbot use?

Usage figures show that generative AI and chatbots have become familiar to many young people, but they measure different things in different places. UNICEF Innocenti reports that the UK National Literacy Trust found generative-AI use among 13–18-year-olds rose from 37% in 2023 to 77% in 2024. Common Sense Media reported that 51% of U.S. teens aged 13–18 used chatbots in 2025. These figures should not be combined: one concerns generative-AI use in the UK, the other chatbot use among U.S. teens.

UNICEF Innocenti also describes an unauthorized University of Zurich debate experiment in which AI-generated responses were three to six times more persuasive than human responses. The experiment did not involve children, so it is not direct evidence that children are more persuadable by chatbots.

What risks do experts identify?

AACAP’s July 2026 guidance, “AI Chatbots: What Parents Should Know”, states: “AI companions are not safe for children.” Its warning is about potential harms, not a claim that every child or every chatbot will produce the same outcome.

  • Human support may be displaced. AACAP warns that a child who prefers a companion to friends or family could become more isolated, and that this might worsen depression or anxiety. The concern is whether chatbot use is replacing trusted relationships and support, not merely how much time a child spends on a screen.
  • Social practice may be lost. A bot that routinely agrees or compliments does not ask a child to negotiate, tolerate disagreement, or respond to another person’s needs. AACAP says this may reduce opportunities to develop social skills.
  • Conversations can cross boundaries. AACAP raises concern about children encountering romantic or sexual topics in chatbot interactions. Parents should not assume that a companion’s humanlike presentation means its conversations are appropriate for a child.
  • Personal disclosure can feel deceptively safe. A companion may seem private and attentive, encouraging a child to share intimate concerns. A chatbot is not a therapist or a trusted adult who can take responsibility for the child’s wellbeing.

Common Sense Media’s parent guide, drawing partly on its own research and testing, describes cases in which companions validated isolation, gave unsafe advice, or supported risky decisions. Those are examples reported by the organization; they do not show that all services behave alike. The guide also says formal long-term research on AI-companion addiction is not yet available.

What can parents and caregivers do?

Set boundaries around access and use

AACAP advises parents to strongly consider restricting or removing children’s access to AI companions. The appropriate boundary depends on a child’s age, maturity, the service’s features, and whether an adult can supervise its use. If a child does use a chatbot, establish clear rules about when and why it may be used, what information must not be shared, and when a person should be involved instead.

Talk about what the system is—and is not

Explain that a chatbot is a tool, not a real friend, therapist, or romantic partner. It can generate caring-sounding language without feeling care or understanding a child as a person does. AACAP recommends discussing both benefits and risks, listening to the child’s experience, and using AI tools together where appropriate.

Heitner, as quoted by OK!, suggests asking: “Would you actually want a friend who agreed with everything you said?” and “Would you respect someone who never challenged your thinking?” These questions can help children compare agreeable simulation with a reciprocal friendship, without shaming them for finding the interaction appealing.

Notice whether the bot is replacing people or coping strategies

Common Sense Media lists possible warning signs such as preferring AI conversations over real friendships, distress when separated from a companion, sharing deep secrets, disrupted sleep or mood, withdrawing from activities, or using AI instead of real-life support. Treat these as reasons to check in, not as a diagnostic checklist or proof of addiction.

Heitner also advises noticing whether a child turns to AI instead of trusted people or self-soothing strategies when lonely, anxious, or upset—especially late at night. Ask what the child gets from the interaction and whether there are people they can turn to when the conversation feels serious or upsetting.

When should a family seek help?

AACAP recommends speaking with a child’s primary care physician if chatbot use seems uncontrollable or if there are concerning changes in mood or behavior. Seek help as well if withdrawal, sleep disruption, secrecy, or reliance on a bot is affecting daily life or relationships. These signs do not by themselves establish a diagnosis; they are reasons to involve a trusted adult and, when appropriate, a health professional.

What is still unknown about children and AI companions?

The long-term developmental effects of children regularly turning to AI companions for comfort, homework help, emotional support, or conversation are not established. Dr. Dana Suskind, Professor of Surgery and Pediatrics at the University of Chicago, has noted that decades-long longitudinal studies on these patterns do not yet exist, writing: “The truth is, we don’t fully know.” That uncertainty is a reason to avoid treating either inevitable harm or harmlessness as settled; families can focus on current signs of displacement, distress, and unsafe interaction.
