Amazon drone delivery is not operating in Westborough, Massachusetts. The company has proposed converting part of its existing fulfillment center at 64 Otis Street into a Prime Air delivery center for its MK30 aircraft, but the proposal had not cleared all local and state steps as of October 3, 2026. There is no confirmed launch date.
What Amazon is proposing in Westborough
The plan would use part of Amazon’s existing fulfillment center at 64 Otis Street as a Prime Air Drone Delivery Center. Westborough’s municipal notice identifies Amazon’s MK30 drone as the proposed aircraft. The proposal is a change to an existing site, not a report of a new facility already operating. Boston.com reported a proposed delivery radius of 7.5 miles and packages weighing up to five pounds. That radius is a proposal detail, not a final service map: the company has not publicly resolved which routes it would use or exactly which customers and communities would be served. According to CBS Boston, Amazon’s eventual goal is as many as 1,000 deliveries per day. That is a reported long-term goal, not a confirmed day-one volume or approved operating limit. When could drone deliveries start?
There was no firm public start date in the latest detailed local coverage available on October 3, 2026. Amazon’s hope to begin by year’s end was reported as a target, not a scheduled launch. The Westborough Planning Board continued its site-plan hearing to October 7, and state Aeronautics Division approval for landing areas was still pending in late-September reporting. These are distinct parts of the process. The Planning Board is considering site-plan changes at the facility; state approval for landing areas is a separate outstanding step, and federal aviation oversight applies to drone airspace operations. A local board decision alone would not establish that flights can begin. The October 7 hearing had not yet taken place as of October 3, so its outcome cannot be assumed.

The proposal has also drawn political pressure. On September 29, State Senator Michael Moore and State Representatives Hannah Kane and Kate Donaghue asked Amazon to pause implementation and answer residents’ questions. Where would the drones fly, and how often?
The reported 7.5-mile radius indicates the proposed service area around the Westborough base, but it does not tell residents which streets or properties would be under regular flight paths. No final route map, operating hours or daily flight schedule had been published in the coverage reviewed. The reported target of up to 1,000 deliveries a day describes Amazon’s eventual ambition, not a settled count of flights over any particular neighborhood.

How loud would Amazon’s MK30 be?
Boston.com reported an Amazon representative’s estimate of about 65 decibels at takeoff and landing. Amazon spokesperson Jack Stelzner separately told WBUR that the drones fly mostly at higher altitude and characterized their sound as “comparable to a window fan on low, lasting 30 seconds and typically not heard indoors.” Both descriptions are company-provided claims, not independent measurements of the proposed Westborough operation. Local officials have said that estimates do not fully answer what repeated flights would feel like in practice. John Gelcich, vice chair of the Westborough Planning Board, told WBUR that the board had received Amazon’s noise information but did not know exactly what residents would experience without hearing the drones in person. No published third-party statistical study directly measuring noise from this Westborough proposal was identified in the available coverage.

WBUR described the proposed MK30 as about 80 pounds and roughly five feet by five feet, with speeds up to 74 mph. Those are reported aircraft specifications, not results of an independent assessment of local flight safety. On privacy, WBUR reported Amazon’s statement that there is no live camera feed and that captured images are stored on encrypted drives. That is the company’s explanation, not an independent privacy audit. Public reporting had not answered every resident question about what imagery is captured, who can access it, or the operational response if a person, animal or object is near a delivery drop zone.
Why residents and officials are questioning the plan
The debate is not simply whether drones can make deliveries. Residents have raised concerns about noise, flight frequency, routes, safety, privacy and the effect on neighborhood character. At a September 15 Planning Board hearing, resident Jennifer Parent asked, “Just because we can do it doesn’t mean we should do it.” Another concern, reflected in the lawmakers’ letter, is whether people can evaluate the proposal without a clearer account of its scale and operating rules.
The evidence available to residents is uneven: board proceedings and pending approvals establish the status of the process, while descriptions of sound, camera use and operational safeguards come from Amazon as reported by local outlets. The central unresolved issue is whether the company will publish enough concrete operating detail for residents and officials to assess the likely local impact before the proposal advances.
