Her account is encouraging, but it is one participant’s report—not proof that the drug works for everyone or that it cures EPP. The FDA said on February 13, 2026, that it could not approve the bitopertin application in its then-current form.
What Pearson says changed
Pearson told Today that sunlight had caused severe pain since childhood. She described the pain as “insufferable” and said she had relied on protective clothing and avoiding exposure. After joining a phase 2 trial and beginning bitopertin in July 2025, she reported tolerating sunlight better and being able to spend more time outside.
That is a personal account from a news interview, not an independently verified clinical outcome. It does not establish how much her symptoms changed on measured assessments, whether the change was caused by the drug, or whether other people with EPP would experience similar relief.
Why sunlight can be painful in EPP
EPP is the condition identified in Pearson’s story. The report describes light exposure as triggering painful reactions. Pearson likened the sensation to being in a hot oven and to pins and needles; those are her descriptions of her experience, not clinical terms.

In the report, University of Washington porphyria expert Sioban Keel, who was involved in the trial, explained that bitopertin targets protoporphyrin IX (PPIX), which is elevated in EPP and related disorders. This is the proposed rationale described in that article; it should not be read as proof that changing PPIX necessarily improves a patient’s daily symptoms.
What the AURORA study is designed to assess
The AURORA protocol describes bitopertin as investigational DISC-1459 and names Disc Medicine as the sponsor. It sets out distinct measures because a biomarker result and a patient’s ability to tolerate daylight are not the same outcome.

The protocol’s inclusion of daylight tolerance is relevant to the experience Pearson described, but the protocol alone does not show that the trial met its objectives or establish the size of any treatment benefit. See the AURORA study record for the study information.
Is bitopertin approved for EPP?
As of the FDA’s February 13, 2026 decision, the answer for the application covered by its letter is no: the agency stated, “we cannot approve this application in its present form.” The letter discusses submitted Trials 201 and 202, including the proposed biomarker endpoint, and refers to DISC-1459-301 as a proposed confirmatory study. It does not establish what happened to that study or whether there has been a later regulatory decision. The FDA’s complete response letter is the source for that decision.

Accordingly, Pearson’s reported improvement should not be interpreted as evidence that bitopertin is an available or approved treatment. Anyone considering EPP care should discuss options with a clinician familiar with porphyria rather than trying to obtain an investigational medicine outside a clinical trial.

Pearson’s story describes protective clothing and avoiding exposure as part of how she managed sunlight before the trial. UPF-rated clothing can be mentioned as exposure-management context, but clothing is not a treatment for EPP and should not be assumed to prevent every reaction. A person’s plan should be individualized with their care team.
