Delaware will test the Salem/Hope Creek nuclear station warning sirens on Tuesday, October 6, 2026, and distribute potassium iodide (KI) tablets on Thursday, October 15. The test is a scheduled quarterly exercise, not a sign of an emergency. KI tablets will be available at no cost to people who live or work in the 10-mile Emergency Planning Zone (EPZ).
When is the siren test, and what should people expect?
The quarterly test is scheduled for Tuesday, October 6, 2026, at 10:45 a.m. Delaware says 37 sirens in the Salem/Hope Creek stations’ 10-mile EPZ will sound for three to five minutes. A test message will then air on local radio through the Emergency Alert System (EAS).
The sirens are designed to alert people outdoors. Delaware describes their coverage as extending north from Delaware City, west to Middletown, and south to Woodland Beach. The participating agencies are the Delaware Emergency Management Agency (DEMA), Delaware State Police, and PSEG. Delaware’s announcement distinguishes this scheduled test from an actual emergency: in an emergency, a steady three-to-five-minute siren tone would signal an event, followed by official EAS information.
Where and when can eligible people get KI tablets?
DEMA and the Delaware Division of Public Health (DPH) will distribute tablets on Thursday, October 15, 2026, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. at:

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What does potassium iodide protect against?
KI helps protect the thyroid from radioactive iodine during a radiological emergency. The FDA explains that KI works by preventing radioactive iodine from being taken up by the thyroid gland; it is not a general radioprotective agent and does not protect the body from other radioactive materials or radiation exposure. See the FDA’s potassium iodide FAQ for the limits of its use.
