AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon announced a joint venture agreement on October 1, 2026, to help extend direct-to-device satellite connectivity in parts of the United States with limited or no terrestrial mobile coverage. The effort is intended to supplement, not replace, the carriers’ cellular networks. It does not yet announce consumer pricing, a launch date, eligibility rules or compatible phone models.
What the carriers announced
The October 1 agreement advances a plan first outlined on May 14, 2026. In May, the companies described an agreement in principle that still required definitive agreements and customary closing conditions. The October announcement said they had entered into a joint venture agreement. The venture will be overseen by a board with representatives from each founding carrier, and wireless-industry executive Paul Roth will serve as interim CEO while the partners search for a permanent CEO. What the venture is meant to do
The carriers say the joint venture will help satellite providers connect directly with compatible devices in areas where terrestrial cellular service is limited or unavailable. They describe several intended benefits:
- Reducing gaps in mobile coverage, especially in underserved areas.
- Providing a possible backup connection during some ground-network disruptions.
- Improving coordination between mobile carriers and satellite providers.
- Developing common technical specifications and pooling spectrum resources.
- Making satellite access easier for rural mobile operators and creating more opportunities for satellite providers to compete.
These are goals stated by the companies, not measured results. The releases do not provide independent evidence that the venture has expanded coverage or improved network performance. October announcement May announcement

Satellite service is a supplement, not a replacement
The carriers describe satellite connectivity as an extension for places where their terrestrial networks offer poor or no coverage. Their stated plan is for conventional cellular networks to remain customers’ everyday mobile service, with satellite links helping in coverage gaps. The venture is not an announcement that the carriers are replacing their mobile networks with satellite service. October announcement May announcement
What this means for existing satellite partnerships
The October release says the carriers’ existing satellite agreements will remain in place, and each carrier can continue developing connectivity efforts independently. The joint venture therefore does not establish that those partnerships are ending or that AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon have chosen one satellite operator for a shared consumer service. Will the deal work with your phone?
The releases do not identify supported phone models, device requirements, customer eligibility, pricing or a consumer launch date. They describe a standards-based effort involving operating-system providers, app developers and device manufacturers, but give no specific consumer instructions. There is not enough information in these announcements to determine whether your current phone will work or whether you will need a different device or plan.
T-Mobile said in the May joint release that it had launched a nationwide satellite-powered direct-to-device network for text and data, and that additional satellite constellations and operators could expand capacity and performance. That is T-Mobile’s description, not an independent test of service. It also does not establish which devices or terms will apply to any service developed through the new venture. What to look for in future consumer details
When the companies announce specific offers, the useful points to check will be:
- Which locations and satellite operators are supported.
- Which phones and device features are compatible.
- Whether the service supports text, voice, data or emergency use.
- Who is eligible and when service will be available.
- Whether satellite access is included in a carrier plan or sold separately.
The October and May announcements do not settle any of those consumer terms. October announcement May announcement
