A first-grade teacher at Hollister Elementary reported that her classroom reached 87°F during a September 2026 heat wave, prompting Goleta Union School District leaders to discuss immediate relief measures and longer-term cooling options. The report documents a local facilities challenge—not a finding that the room violated a statewide temperature limit.

What happened in the Goleta classroom?

At a Goleta Union School District Board of Education meeting during one of the hottest days of the week, Hollister Elementary first-grade teacher Victoria Aguirre said her classroom reached 87°F on Wednesday, September 9, 2026. She said it had never been that hot in the room before and told the board, “That’s just not acceptable for our kids to be working in.” The account was reported by Noozhawk on September 11, 2026.

Aguirre also said each classroom typically had one fan, but that hers was “just circulating hot air.” Her comment describes the problem teachers faced; it is not evidence that a fan cooled the room.

Is 87°F too hot for a classroom?

The reported temperature is a clear sign of uncomfortable conditions in this classroom, but the cited coverage does not establish a universal temperature at which children can or cannot learn. It also does not determine whether 87°F violated a California statewide classroom-temperature rule. The story reports a local incident and board discussion, not a legal or regulatory finding.

How hot were other Goleta campuses?

During an August heat wave, Goleta district staff collected campus temperature readings. Noozhawk reported that Ellwood Elementary was the coolest campus, topping out at about 76°F, while Mountain View Elementary was the warmest, at about 82°F during the school day. These are reported readings from that episode, not a districtwide study or a comprehensive dataset of classroom temperatures.

What short-term responses did district leaders discuss?

District staff and board members discussed a mix of measures for reducing heat exposure or offering relief. The meeting coverage describes proposals and plans under consideration; it does not say every measure was already in place.

  • Cool relief spaces: Identify cooler areas where students can get out of hot classrooms.
  • Outdoor activity: Stop outdoor play during the hottest parts of the day.
  • Shade and misters: Use pop-up shade structures and misters at recess and lunch. Assistant Superintendent of Fiscal Services Jordan Goines said pop-up shade could be installed “rather quickly.” Shade and misters address outdoor exposure, not indoor classroom temperature.
  • Fans: Count available classroom fans and deploy them where needed. Aguirre’s account cautions that a fan circulating hot air may not make a room cooler.
  • Portable air conditioning: Consider portable units at certain campuses. The report does not establish which rooms would receive them, their suitability for particular classrooms, or whether they were purchased or installed.

Assistant Superintendent of Pupil Services John Schettler said the district follows National Weather Service advisories and encourages families to send students with water and sunscreen. Those are district guidance and family-preparedness steps; the report does not present them as solutions to indoor heat.

What longer-term cooling choices are on the table?

District staff were pricing different approaches: installing air conditioning throughout the district or concentrating cooling in shared spaces such as libraries and multipurpose rooms. Those options differ in reach and building demands, but the report provides no formal side-by-side cost or performance study.

Approach Where it could provide cooling What the report establishes
Districtwide air conditioning Potentially classrooms and other spaces across the district Superintendent Mary Kahn gave a preliminary estimate of up to $60 million; a formal estimate was still pending. Goines identified electrical capacity as the biggest obstacle.
Cooling shared spaces Libraries, multipurpose rooms and other shared areas Staff were pricing this as an alternative to districtwide installation. The report does not state a cost, timeline or capacity to serve students.
Portable air-conditioning units at selected campuses Some locations, with specific placement not stated Units were under consideration; the report does not state a price, deployment schedule or electrical requirements.

The $60 million figure is Kahn’s preliminary maximum estimate as reported by Noozhawk, not an approved budget or settled project cost. Electrical capacity matters because cooling equipment may require building systems that can support it; the report does not provide campus-by-campus capacity assessments.

Why calendar timing does not settle the problem

Board member Emily Zacarias raised the possibility of starting the academic calendar after Labor Day, while noting September can still be hot. She urged the district to act beyond the immediate heat wave: “We want tangible steps. We keep tabling it when it gets cool, and this issue is not going away.” Board member Sholeh Jahangir also pressed for practical support, saying, “They shouldn’t have to run around begging for a fan.” Both quotations were reported by Noozhawk.

The discussion points to two different planning horizons: short-term measures for hot days and facilities decisions that require cost estimates and electrical planning. Changing the calendar might shift when students are in school, but it would not by itself cool classrooms during hot weather.

What families and staff can take from the report

  • The 87°F reading was reported by one teacher for one first-grade classroom on September 9, 2026; it is not a measure of all Goleta classrooms.
  • The district had relatively limited air conditioning, according to Superintendent Kahn, and the board discussion included interim steps as well as larger capital options.
  • Families can follow district guidance to send water and sunscreen, but the report does not suggest those steps resolve hot indoor conditions.
  • Portable cooling equipment, fans and shade structures are not interchangeable: their usefulness depends on where heat is occurring, building and electrical constraints, and how the equipment is deployed. The reporting does not establish household equipment as suitable for school use.
