Skyward Group announced on September 30, 2026, that it is expanding ibott’s autonomous-vehicle insurance expertise into the U.S. primary market. The planned suite is aimed at commercial participants across the AV ecosystem—not individual drivers—and the announcement does not disclose policy terms, pricing, eligibility or how to apply.
What Skyward Group announced
Skyward Group says it is bringing ibott’s specialized autonomous-vehicle capabilities together with the group’s broader distribution and market access. The announcement describes a suite of solutions for commercial AV risks; it is not a published policy wording or a consumer insurance product. Skyward Group’s September 30, 2026 announcement names three types of potential participants:
- Vehicle manufacturers
- Autonomous-driving system developers
- Fleet operators
The release does not provide individual product launch dates or specific coverage details. It identifies an expansion into the U.S. primary market, but does not establish that every named participant can currently buy coverage.
How Skyward, Apollo and ibott fit together
Skyward Group describes itself as the umbrella brand for Skyward Specialty and Apollo. ibott is a specialist underwriting business within Apollo, focused on the digital economy and emerging industries such as new mobility, autonomous vehicles, connected technology and platform-based business models. The announced expansion connects ibott’s expertise with Skyward Group’s wider distribution and market access.

Skyward says ibott has more than a decade of experience developing solutions for autonomy and digital-economy risks. That is the company’s description of its own experience, not an independently reported measure of the AV insurance market.
Why AV insurance can involve multiple businesses
Autonomous-vehicle operations can involve separate manufacturers, developers of autonomous-driving systems and fleet operators. Their responsibilities and exposures may intersect, so a commercial insurance arrangement needs to account for the particular businesses and operations involved. Skyward characterizes these connected risks as a poor fit for traditional insurance models; the announcement does not quantify that difference or provide a numerical comparison.
Chris Moore, ibott’s chief underwriting officer, said: “We believe the future of autonomous vehicles and their continued expansion and adoption requires insurance that is built around how these businesses actually operate.” Skyward Group chairman and CEO Andrew Robinson said: “Autonomous mobility risks are moving rapidly from innovation to commercialization and the insurance industry needs to evolve alongside it at speed.” These are company executives’ views, not independent findings about adoption or insurance performance.
What insurance do autonomous-vehicle companies need?
There is no single answer in the announcement. A manufacturer, an autonomous-driving system developer and a fleet operator may have different operations and responsibilities, and the appropriate coverage depends on the specific business and policy. The September announcement does not state which liability risks are covered, what limits apply, or whether coverage is primary, excess or a combination.

For a meaningful comparison of commercial AV insurance arrangements, a company would need to establish:
- Which participant and operations are insured
- Which liability layers are covered, and whether protection is primary or excess
- How coverage addresses multiple parties and their responsibilities
- Geographic scope and eligibility requirements
- Policy limits, exclusions and access conditions
- Whether the arrangement is exclusive to a partner group or generally available
What the earlier Uber program does—and does not—show
A separate arrangement announced by Marsh and Apollo ibott on March 12, 2026, offers a useful example of a bespoke AV insurance facility. The Marsh announcement describes the Autonomous Vehicle Insurance Program for Uber as supporting Uber’s AV partners, including developers, fleet operators and manufacturers, with primary and excess liability coverage through a master policy. The release says the facility is exclusively available to Uber partners.
That example shows that a tailored arrangement involving several AV participant types exists. It does not establish that Skyward Group’s September expansion has the same structure, terms, coverage layers or eligibility. Marsh’s Autonomous, Mobility, & Platform Risk Practice Leader Melissa Daly called the Uber facility “a meaningful step forward in delivering a scalable, cost-effective framework for AV risk management and accelerating the responsible deployment of autonomous technology.” Her statement refers to the Uber program, not the newly announced Skyward offering.
What is not yet disclosed
Skyward’s announcement does not publish:
- Policy wording, limits or exclusions
- Pricing or underwriting criteria
- Eligibility requirements for individual companies
- A launch timetable for specific products
- An open application, broker referral or quote path
As a result, companies cannot use the announcement alone to determine whether they qualify, compare policy terms or request a quote through a stated channel.
