In Sam’s account of creating the Toolsyte Football Formation Builder, the harder decisions were how to keep player positions meaningful as the pitch resized, make formations editable, and ensure the controls worked for both mouse and touch users.
What does a football formation builder need to do?
The Toolsyte Football Formation Builder was intended to do a small number of things in a browser: let someone choose a formation, show players on a pitch, move them, and arrange a lineup without installing software. That narrow task still brought several design problems into view. The pitch had to resize without distorting the layout, formation presets needed to remain adjustable, and the interface had to work at different screen widths and with different input methods.
Sam describes the project as a practical example of how an apparently simple browser tool can involve more than its most visible feature. Drawing the pitch was comparatively straightforward; preserving comfortable use across screen sizes was where more decisions accumulated.
Why use relative positions instead of fixed pixels?
Fixed offsets change meaning as the pitch resizes
A player placed a fixed number of pixels from a pitch edge does not keep the same relative position when the pitch becomes narrower. The player can appear to drift in relation to teammates and the field. For a formation, that means the layout may stop looking like the arrangement the preset was meant to represent.

Coordinates tied to the pitch preserve the layout’s shape
Sam’s approach was to express player locations relative to the pitch, using percentages in the examples. The pitch can then change size while the players retain their basic arrangement. The key idea is to define a coordinate system for the pitch itself rather than positioning players as if they belonged in ordinary rows or columns.
These are display coordinates, not measurements of real football-field distances. A coordinate map helps the browser render a recognizable arrangement; it does not claim that a player occupies a particular measured location on an actual field.
How can the same pitch display different formations?
Keep formation data separate from the rendering
In the design Sam describes, the pitch is responsible for displaying players, while formation data supplies their starting positions and roles. A simplified 4-3-3, for example, can describe a goalkeeper, defenders, midfielders, and forwards alongside their relative x/y positions.

With that separation, another formation can be represented by another set of starting coordinates and role information, while the pitch continues to use the same display logic. This avoids treating each preset as an entirely separate layout implementation.

A formation name is not a complete tactical specification. Two 4-3-3 lineups can stagger their midfielders differently, while roles for wide attackers or wing-backs can vary in formations such as a 4-2-3-1 or 3-5-2. One fixed coordinate map cannot represent every team’s interpretation.
For that reason, presets work best as recognizable arrangements users can adjust. As Sam puts it, “They are starting points.” That framing is more honest and useful than presenting a preset as the uniquely correct version of a formation.

What changes when people use touch instead of a mouse?
Sam found that small player markers were easier to grab with a mouse than with a finger. Touch also creates a competing interaction: a movement intended to drag a player can be interpreted as a request to scroll the page.
One useful design distinction is between what a marker looks like and how large an area responds to a touch. A marker can stay visually compact while having a more forgiving interaction area. The visual pitch remains readable, but users do not have to land precisely on a tiny target.
Touch behavior therefore needs attention of its own; a layout that works with a desktop pointer does not automatically feel comfortable on a phone. The account identifies the challenge but does not report a formal usability study or quantified results.

What makes a responsive formation tool usable on a phone?
Reducing the pitch width is only part of responsive design. Sam also points to the surrounding controls and the amount of vertical space the pitch receives. Buttons may need to wrap, labels must remain readable, and pitch height has to balance formation clarity against the need to scroll.
The author describes checking the interface at multiple widths and looking for uncomfortable points. No specific viewport sizes, devices, participant counts, or success rates are reported, so this is a description of the design process rather than a measured finding.
The broader lesson is that a page can adapt technically while still being awkward to use. In Sam’s words, “A layout can be technically responsive and still be unpleasant to use.” The relevant question is not only whether the pitch fits, but whether users can still understand the formation and operate its controls comfortably.

Why keep the implementation small?
Sam says the finished builder used plain HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. The rationale was the scope: render a pitch, load formation data, display players, handle interactions, and adapt the interface. For this small tool, working directly with coordinates and CSS kept those responsibilities visible.
That is a contextual choice, not a rule against frameworks. Sam acknowledges that frameworks can be useful when an application has more state, shared components, and data flows. The appropriate choice depends on the complexity of the product being built, rather than a blanket preference for one approach.
How should feature requests be kept in scope?
Potential additions included player photos, custom colours, substitutes, tactical arrows, team logos, multiple pitch styles, saved formations, and exports. Each might be valuable in a broader tactics application, but every addition also introduces interface and implementation work.
A practical filter is the user’s main task: open the page, choose a formation, and arrange a team. A feature belongs in the first version when it materially supports that task; otherwise, it can wait until there is a clear reason to expand the tool. This keeps the central interaction—selecting and arranging a lineup—from getting buried under options.
