Samsung announced its first Galaxy Fold in 2019; Apple announced its first foldable iPhone, the iPhone Duo, on September 9, 2026. That chronology makes the Duo a notable reversal of the familiar Apple-first narrative, but it does not prove Apple copied Samsung or any other specific device.
Why the iPhone Duo feels like an exception
Apple’s announcement calls iPhone Duo its first foldable iPhone. The company says the phone has a 7.6-inch inner display and a 5.4-inch outer display, and will run iOS 27. Those are Apple’s announced specifications, not independent measurements or hands-on findings. Apple’s September 9, 2026 announcement describes the device and its planned release schedule.
That launch puts Apple on the other side of a familiar industry pattern: Android manufacturers offered folding phones years before Apple announced one. So the provocative title works as an opinion about timing and category leadership. It should not be read as proof of design copying. Public announcements establish that Samsung announced a foldable first; they do not establish what influenced Apple’s design decisions.
Samsung’s Galaxy Fold established an earlier milestone
Samsung announced Galaxy Fold on February 20, 2019. Its announcement described a 7.3-inch folding main display, a cover display, and software designed to use the two screens in tandem. Samsung said Multi-Active Window could show up to three apps at once and that App Continuity could carry an app experience between the cover and main displays. These are features Samsung announced at the time, not a present-day independent comparison with iPhone Duo. Samsung’s original Galaxy Fold announcement provides the historical specifications and feature descriptions.

What the announcements let us compare—and what they do not
| Point of comparison | iPhone Duo | Samsung Galaxy Fold |
|---|---|---|
| Announcement and timing | Apple announced it September 9, 2026; preorders were announced for October 16 and availability for October 23, 2026. These are announced future dates as of the announcement, not confirmation of current availability. (Apple, September 9, 2026.) | Samsung announced it February 20, 2019, then announced US availability in September 2019. (Samsung, February 20, 2019; September 27, 2019.) |
| Display layout | Apple announced a 7.6-inch inner display and a 5.4-inch outer display. | Samsung announced a 7.3-inch folding main display and a cover display; the cited announcement does not state the cover display’s size. |
| Multitasking and continuity | Apple’s announcement describes iOS 27 features, but the cited material does not establish an equivalent to Samsung’s specific three-app Multi-Active Window or App Continuity descriptions. | Samsung announced Multi-Active Window for up to three apps and App Continuity between displays. |
| Price | Not stated in the cited Apple announcement. | Not stated in the cited Samsung announcements. |
The table compares what the companies announced, not how the phones perform in practice. The available material does not support conclusions about durability, crease visibility, battery life, speed, or which device is easier to use. Nor does it establish that one platform has better foldable-app support overall.

Apple’s announced accessories and Pencil support
Apple announced two dedicated accessories for iPhone Duo: the iPhone Duo Case at US$79 and the iPhone Duo Folio with Kickstand at US$129. Apple said both were expected to be orderable from October 16, 2026. These are US prices and announced ordering dates; the announcement does not establish current stock at any particular retailer.
Apple also said support for Apple Pencil with USB-C would arrive later in 2026. That is a future-support statement from Apple. It does not, by itself, confirm compatibility with every Apple Pencil model or configuration. Apple’s announcement is the source for the accessory prices, dates, and Pencil statement.

Does “Apple copied Android” hold up?
As a broad chronology claim, the answer is clear: Samsung announced a folding smartphone in 2019, years before Apple announced iPhone Duo in 2026. That makes “Apple entered a category Android had already developed” fair. As a claim about copying a particular design or feature, the evidence is not enough. A timeline cannot show intent, design lineage, or which products Apple’s teams considered.
That distinction matters because a foldable form factor is not one single design. The announcements show different stated display sizes and different descriptions of multitasking; they do not show that the Duo reproduces the Galaxy Fold’s design. Without direct evidence about influence, “copy” belongs in opinion or debate—not as a settled factual verdict.
