Canongate announced the book on 1 October 2026, confirming hardback, ebook and audio editions but no publication date. Canongate’s announcement also calls it Swinton’s first book; that description needs context because an earlier personal book, Tilda Swinton – Ongoing, was published in connection with an Eye Filmmuseum exhibition.
What is Material Evidence?
Material Evidence is a newly announced memoir by actor and artist Tilda Swinton. Canongate describes it as a life story shaped by objects and the memories, questions and associations they prompt—not as a conventional chronological autobiography. The publisher’s examples include a christening dress, a letter, a wooden leg, a sweatshirt, a length of embroidery silk and a photograph. Canongate’s announcement presents these objects as starting points for a wider exploration of personal and shared histories.
The approach makes the material things more than keepsakes: each one opens onto a different strand of experience. Canongate says the book ranges across family history, class and inheritance, Scottish identity, war and its aftermath, grief, collaboration, performance and art. The announcement does not provide a chapter list or describe how the objects are ordered in the finished book.
Is this really Swinton’s first book?
Canongate calls Material Evidence Swinton’s first book. That wording is best understood as referring to her newly announced memoir, not as a claim that no earlier book was associated with her. In a 4 September 2025 release, Eye Filmmuseum described Tilda Swinton – Ongoing as a personal book and a visual biography and overview of Swinton’s work; it was published by Rizzoli and Hannibal Books. Eye Filmmuseum’s release ties that earlier volume to its exhibition.

When will it be published, and in what formats?
Canongate’s 1 October 2026 announcement confirms hardback, ebook and audio editions, but gives no firm publication date. It also does not state a price, ISBN, preorder link or retail availability. The announcement names De Arbeiderspers for Dutch rights and Flammarion for French rights, and quotes Farrar, Straus and Giroux editor Mitzi Angel welcoming Swinton to FSG. Those details indicate publishing involvement, not a complete territory-by-territory release schedule.
A report dated 3 October 2026 gives fall 2028 as FSG’s expected timing. That timing is reported by the secondary source, not stated in Canongate’s announcement, so it should not be treated as a confirmed global publication date. The report does not replace a direct date from the relevant publisher.

What Swinton says the book is about
In Canongate’s announcement, Swinton describes Material Evidence as “a book about curiosity” and “a trail of breadcrumbs through the forest.” She says she hopes readers will come away newly attentive to the changing spirit of a person and to the enduring material world that surrounds and sustains individual lives. The statement reflects the book’s organizing idea: objects can hold their form while prompting memories and interpretations that keep changing.
