KDE Plasma 6.8 Beta 2 focuses on interface polish and bug fixes rather than a major redesign. KDE’s October 3, 2026 report says the desktop is still in testing, with a public release planned for October 14; that date is a target, not a guarantee. The changes include neater tiled-window corners, improved widget and System Monitor behavior, and fixes for Spectacle and remote desktop sessions.

What changes in Plasma 6.8 Beta 2?

KDE’s October 3 weekly report describes a mix of visible refinements and fixes. The UI changes are modest but practical:

  • Tiled windows: tiled windows now have square corners, helping adjacent tiles fit together neatly.
  • Dictionary widget: its colors now adapt fully when you change the active color scheme or Plasma style.
  • System Monitor: the Processes and Applications pages no longer sometimes display double scrollbars.
  • Screen configuration notices: Plasma sends fewer notifications about screen configuration, especially when they provide little value.
  • Accessibility: the Brightness & Color widget is now fully screen-reader-friendly.

The report also lists fixes for a crash triggered when applications close or crash in specific ways, Spectacle recordings that sometimes failed to save, and Spectacle’s Share feature. Notification thumbnail drag-and-drop menus again offer the Move action. Remote desktop authentication works with FreeRDP 3.32 or later, and a separate session issue that could prevent new remote desktop sessions from starting has been fixed.

What are the beta’s notable additions?

Kup backup scheduler

KDE’s Beta 2 announcement identifies Kup as a new Plasma module. Kup schedules backups for the Plasma desktop. KDE’s preceding report says the project encourages operating-system developers to include it and identifies off-device backup as a use case; that does not mean every distribution will package or enable it by default.

Union theming preview

Union theming is available as a public tech preview. KDE says it can theme QtWidgets applications such as Dolphin and Kate, as well as QtQuick applications. The support is preliminary, and KDE warns that bugs are expected.

To try Union, install the union package (the package name may differ by distribution), then open System Settings → Colors & Themes → Application Style, select Breeze (Union), and apply the change. If you report a problem, compare the same application with Breeze so it is clearer whether the issue is specific to Union.

How can you try Plasma 6.8 Beta 2?

KDE recommends booting a live image from a USB disk as the easiest way to test the beta without replacing your installed desktop. A USB flash drive is one practical way to do that, but buying one is not required if you already have suitable bootable media.

  1. Open KDE’s Beta 2 announcement and choose the testing route that suits you. It links to a live image, Docker images, distribution package information, and source-compilation instructions.
  2. For the live-image route, write the image to a USB disk and boot from it. Follow your computer’s boot-device procedure; the exact key or menu varies by manufacturer.
  3. If you prefer installing packages, check the current package status for your own distribution first. KDE cautions that packages may not be available on every distribution at announcement time.
  4. Try the features and workflows you rely on, and report bugs through KDE’s testing channels linked from the announcement.

Is Plasma 6.8 Beta 2 ready for daily use?

It is a beta intended for testing, not a release KDE describes as safe for every production system. The weekly report says there have been “not many reported regressions” so far, but that is a qualitative observation—not a measured stability result. KDE is still asking users to test and report problems. For a work-critical computer, a live session or another non-primary test setup is the more cautious choice.

Don’t confuse Plasma 6.8 with Plasma 6.9

KDE’s weekly report separately mentions work planned for Plasma 6.9, including a Task Manager “Move to Screen” context-menu item and comments for custom ufw firewall rules in System Settings. Those are 6.9 items, not features of Plasma 6.8 Beta 2.
