The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker is available in Nintendo’s GameCube Classics library on Nintendo Switch 2, for players with Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack. But Nintendo’s reviewed October 2026 release roundup does not list a new Wind Waker launch this month. The current Switch 2 access is a subscription-library listing, not an announced October rerelease.
Is The Wind Waker returning in October 2026?
There is no new October 2026 release of The Wind Waker in Nintendo UK’s roundup of games launching that month, published on 30 September 2026. The roundup is a selection of upcoming games, so its omission does not rule out every possible region-specific announcement or later update. The likely source of confusion is that the game is already playable on Switch 2 through Nintendo’s GameCube Classics collection. Nintendo announced it as part of the collection’s launch lineup, and its current UK classics catalog lists it there.
How to play The Wind Waker on Switch 2
You need a Nintendo Switch 2 and a Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership to access the GameCube Classics collection. Nintendo’s current UK catalog includes The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker; Nintendo Australia’s launch announcement specified the console and membership required for the collection. Check Nintendo’s current membership terms for your region before subscribing.

Nintendo UK’s GameCube Classics catalog describes a growing library for Switch 2 players and names The Wind Waker. Nintendo Australia’s Switch 2 launch announcement says the GameCube collection was available at launch, on 5 June, to Nintendo Switch 2 owners with Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack.
How this differs from the 2013 Wind Waker HD release
The subscription-library version should not be confused with The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD, which Nintendo announced for Wii U in 2013. Nintendo UK said the HD version would launch on 4 October 2013, both in shops and as a Nintendo eShop download. That historical date does not indicate a new 2026 release.

Do you need the GameCube-style controller?
No requirement is stated in Nintendo’s launch announcement. Nintendo announced a dedicated wireless controller modeled on the original GameCube controller for paid Nintendo Switch Online members, but the announcement does not say that it is necessary to play The Wind Waker. Treat it as an optional accessory, not a condition of access to the game.
