Claude Code updating itself does not mean the Skills you use are updating too. The reliable fix is to keep team-owned Skills in version control and define how each installation receives changes—then review updates before using them.

Do Claude Code skills update automatically?

Not necessarily. Anthropic documents automatic updates for the Claude Code application: it checks for updates on startup and periodically while running, and a downloaded update takes effect the next time Claude Code starts. You can also run claude update to update Claude Code manually. Those mechanisms update the application; they do not establish that separately installed Skill files are refreshed from their source. See Anthropic’s Claude Code setup guide and CLI reference.

Skills have their own distribution paths. Anthropic describes sharing them through version control, installing them as plugins from a marketplace, or adding them manually under ~/.claude/skills. The right update method therefore depends on how a particular Skill reached your environment. The application updater should not be treated as a universal Skill updater. See Anthropic’s overview of Claude Skills.

How do I update Claude skills?

Start by identifying the Skill’s source of truth and the route used to install it. Then synchronize through that route instead of assuming Claude Code will fetch changes for you.

  1. Find the installed copy and its source. Determine whether the Skill is maintained in a repository, distributed through a plugin marketplace, or copied manually into ~/.claude/skills. Anthropic documents these as distinct ways to share or add Skills.
  2. Update the source of truth. For a team-owned Skill, make changes in its version-controlled repository and submit them through your normal review process. Anthropic explicitly describes version control as a way to share Skills with a team.
  3. Use the distribution path your consumers rely on. For a manually installed copy, update that copy using your organization’s documented process. For a marketplace plugin, follow the marketplace’s sync process. A change in a repository is not, by itself, proof that every installed copy has changed.
  4. Review the change before accepting it. Inspect the updated instructions and any bundled files, dependencies, or directions to access external networks. Anthropic warns that Skills may include or direct Claude to install third-party packages and says, “Only install skills only from trusted sources.” See Use skills in Claude.
  5. Check the active session. If you are using repository-mounted Skills with managed agents, Anthropic says the repository’s root .claude/skills directory is scanned at session start. A change made after a session has started may not be available to that session; check in a new session when diagnosing an apparently old Skill. This behavior is specific to the documented managed-agent setup, not a general guarantee for every local installation. See Anthropic’s managed-agent Skills documentation.

How do I keep Claude Code skills in sync across a team?

Use version control as the source of truth

Keep team-owned Skill files in a repository so changes can be reviewed and shared as commits or pull requests. Make clear which repository and revision are authoritative, and document how each team member or system receives the approved version. That separates two questions that are easy to conflate: whether a change is approved, and whether it has reached a particular installation.

Document marketplace synchronization

If your organization uses a GitHub-synced marketplace, record whether an administrator must trigger a sync after repository changes or whether automatic sync is enabled. Anthropic’s Help Center says an administrator can trigger a sync after pushing changes. When automatic sync is enabled, a merged pull request that includes a plugin version bump triggers a sync. That condition does not mean every push updates every user. See Manage plugins for your organization.

Review Skill changes like software changes

Before distributing a revised Skill, review its instructions and files for unexpected behavior, dependencies, and external network directions. Make the review part of the same change-control process used to approve the update. Skills can contain more than descriptive text, so a familiar Skill name is not a substitute for checking what changed.

Why is Claude still using an old skill?

First identify what “old” means: the Claude Code application may be current while the Skill file, plugin, or session context is not. Check these likely causes:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • The Skill was installed separately. Updating Claude Code does not establish that a manually copied Skill or repository-based Skill was refreshed.
  • The new repository version was not synchronized. A pushed change may still need an administrator-triggered marketplace sync. If automatic organization sync is used, check whether the merged pull request included a plugin version bump.
  • You are checking an already-running managed-agent session. In Anthropic’s documented repository-mounted managed-agent setup, Skills in the root .claude/skills directory are scanned at session start. Test the change in a new session rather than assuming the current one has reloaded it.
  • The active installation differs from the copy you edited. Confirm the installation path and distribution route used by the environment where Claude is running; editing a source repository does not prove that a manual or marketplace installation points to it.

Anthropic’s published documentation describes application updates, Skill distribution, and specific marketplace and managed-agent synchronization behaviors. It does not establish a universal automatic update mechanism or built-in stale-Skill detector for every installation type.

A simple maintenance checklist

  • Store team-owned Skills in a version-controlled repository.
  • Write down how each consumer gets updates: manual copy, marketplace sync, or repository-mounted managed-agent session.
  • For GitHub-synced organization marketplaces, document the admin sync step or the automatic-sync version-bump requirement.
  • Review changed instructions, files, dependencies, and network directions before accepting an update.
  • When a managed-agent Skill seems out of date, verify it in a session started after the repository change.
