Kim Yo Jong said North Korea conducted an intermediate-range strategic missile firing drill on Oct. 3, 2026, with leader Kim Jong Un overseeing it. South Korea reported detecting a launch from the Wonsan area; Japan gave a shorter flight-distance estimate. North Korea also claimed the missile could maneuver in unusual ways and used AI, but those capabilities were not independently verified in the reports.
What North Korea said happened
Kim Yo Jong announced that North Korea had carried out a firing drill earlier on Saturday, Oct. 3. Yonhap, citing a statement carried by the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA), quoted her as saying: “At dawn of this morning, a drill of firing a strategic weapon toward the East Sea of Korea was conducted.” Kim described the weapon as an intermediate-range missile and said Kim Jong Un oversaw the drill. Yonhap’s report and Reuters’ report carried details of her announcement.
What South Korea and Japan reported
South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff said it detected a ballistic missile launched from the Wonsan area that flew more than 700 kilometers (435 miles). Japan’s Defense Ministry estimated the flight at about 680 kilometers (422 miles) and said the missile landed outside Japan’s exclusive economic zone, according to The Associated Press.
| Reporting authority | Reported flight distance | Reported landing information |
|---|---|---|
| South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff, as reported by Reuters and AP | More than 700 km (435 miles) | Not stated in the cited reports |
| Japan’s Defense Ministry, as reported by AP | About 680 km (422 miles) | Outside Japan’s exclusive economic zone |
These are separate national estimates, not a reconciled measurement. The difference alone does not show that either country failed to track the missile.

Did North Korea prove the missile used AI or evaded tracking?
No. Kim claimed the missile followed a wave-like trajectory, made low-altitude orbit changes and used AI. Reuters quoted her saying: “Whenever we applied the wave-like trajectory mode to missiles, the enemy failed to track the targets from their first skip points.” Reuters reported that she offered no evidence for the tracking claim. AP said South Korea had not immediately commented on the claimed capabilities.
Those details remain North Korean claims in the reports available on Oct. 3, 2026; the reporting does not independently verify the trajectory, maneuvering, AI use or an ability to evade interception. AP also quoted Kim saying, “There is no way to avoid this attack.” That is her assertion, not an independent assessment of interception capability.

What is known about the missile type
The reports describe the weapon as an intermediate-range strategic missile or a ballistic missile, but do not provide a model designation. Kim’s use of “strategic” is her characterization; the coverage does not establish a nuclear warhead or confirm a nuclear role. It is therefore not possible from these accounts to identify a particular missile family or determine its payload.

AP placed the launch amid heightened inter-Korean tensions following land mine blasts along the border. South Korea said three soldiers were injured in blasts on Sept. 21, and a joint South Korean–U.N. Command inspection attributed the blasts to North Korean mines. North Korea denied responsibility, according to AP.
