No—not in the sense that every planet and object will be physically obliterated. A 2026 theoretical study forecasts that the outer Solar System’s orbital arrangement may become unstable as the Sun loses mass late in its life. Its results come from numerical simulations, not observations or a precise prediction for our particular Solar System.
What “terminal instability” means
The phrase refers to a possible breakdown of the outer planets’ orbital architecture—not the Sun exploding, nor the literal destruction of every object in the Solar System. In the study, disruption means planets’ orbits cross and can lead to violent scattering. Some objects could be ejected or collide, but the abstract does not establish that all matter in the system disappears.
The paper, “Terminal instability of the Solar System triggered by stochastic solar mass loss,” is by Konstantin Batygin, Jim Fuller, and Fred C. Adams. Its arXiv record is dated September 11, 2026, and says it was accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal Letters. Why the authors expect the outer planets’ orbits to change
As the Sun evolves late in its life, it will lose mass. Earlier estimates discussed in the paper assumed that loss would be smooth. Batygin, Fuller, and Adams instead model asymmetric mass loss in separate parcels moving in independently directed ways. Those ejections give the Sun small recoil “kicks.” The authors propose that the kicks can make planetary orbits wander randomly over time, increasing the chance that outer planets’ orbits cross.

In the authors’ numerical experiments, orbit crossings can begin during the red-giant branch when the modeled mass-loss granularity is within observationally permitted kicks. That is a result of their model, not a direct observation of the Sun’s future behavior.

How this differs from earlier lifetime estimates
The paper contrasts its result with earlier expectations that the giant-planet architecture might persist for about 100 billion years, even accounting for solar mass loss and stellar flybys. It also cites an estimate of roughly 1018 years for the outer system’s intrinsic dynamical lifetime. Those figures refer to different assumptions and measures of longevity; they should not be read as directly interchangeable countdowns.
With stochastic solar mass loss included, the authors describe the outer system’s revised dynamical lifetime as approximately 1 billion years after white-dwarf formation. That is a model-based forecast for the outer planets’ orbital arrangement. It is not a claim that the whole Solar System will vanish on that timescale. The paper’s abstract summarizes the comparison.

Does this mean Earth or the inner planets are doomed?
This study’s central result concerns the outer Solar System’s long-term orbital stability after the Sun’s late-life evolution. It does not establish that Earth, or every inner planet, will be destroyed by the proposed outer-system instability. The paper’s roughly 1% Mercury estimate is specifically about destabilization before the Sun leaves the main sequence; it is a separate background estimate, not a claim that the outer planets’ later instability will destroy Mercury.
The distinction matters: the fate of the Sun and inner planets, the stability of the giant planets, and the survival of every small object are different questions. The headline’s “completely destroyed” goes beyond what the abstract reports.
