It also brought a shared sync/async pipeline API, options-based strategy configuration, built-in telemetry, and a staged migration path. The maintainers called the work a complete refactoring, but the available evidence does not establish that every line of code was rewritten.
What changed in Polly 8?
The most useful way to understand v8 is as an architectural redesign, not simply a rename. Policies gave way to strategies, and pipelines became the place where those strategies are composed and executed.
| Area | Polly v7 | Polly v8 |
|---|---|---|
| Core building block | Policies, often composed by wrapping one policy around another | A ResiliencePipeline containing one or more strategies |
| Terminology | Policies | Resilience strategies, including retry and timeout |
| Sync and async APIs | Separate interfaces such as ISyncPolicy and IAsyncPolicy |
ResiliencePipeline and ResiliencePipeline<T> API families support synchronous and asynchronous execution |
| Configuration | Policy construction and policy-specific APIs | Options-based configuration for individual strategies |
| Packages and telemetry | Earlier package and integration model | Polly.Core provides the core API; Polly.Extensions provides dependency-injection and telemetry integration. Polly v8 also includes built-in telemetry. |
| Migration | Existing v7 policies use the v7 API | The v7 API remains available through the Polly package, allowing incremental conversion before switching to Polly.Core |
Policies became strategies inside pipelines
In v7, a policy was the main unit for defining a resilience behavior, and policies could be wrapped together. In v8, retry, timeout, and related behaviors are called strategies. A pipeline is the composition that brings one or more strategies together and provides the execution API. The Polly project summarized the model in its September 28, 2023 announcement: “All strategies start with a pipeline.”
Sync and async use one pipeline family
V7 exposed distinct synchronous and asynchronous policy interfaces, including ISyncPolicy and IAsyncPolicy. V8 replaces that split with the ResiliencePipeline and ResiliencePipeline<T> family, which supports both synchronous and asynchronous flows. That is a change to the API model; it does not mean every call site can be changed without considering whether its operation is synchronous or asynchronous.

Strategy configuration and package layout changed
V8 configures individual strategies through options, and its package ecosystem separates the core API from extensions. Polly.Core contains the core pipeline API, while Polly.Extensions adds dependency-injection and telemetry integration. These changes matter when reviewing project references as well as when translating policy construction code.
Why did Polly v8 break from the old policy API?
The Polly Project’s September 2023 announcement says outstanding issues and performance improvements called for a complete refactoring. Joel Hulen, the project’s lead owner, described the scale of the undertaking in that announcement: “Some items, as well as the performance improvements, required a complete refactoring of the framework, which is a daunting proposition when your library has almost 500 million downloads.” The nearly 500 million figure is the project’s historical figure as reported in that announcement, not a current download count.

Microsoft’s .NET 8 article gives additional context: Microsoft and the Polly maintainers collaborated after Microsoft proposed integrating resilience enhancements it had built in internal libraries. Microsoft said those additions called for a new API and culminated in Polly v8. Together, the accounts support describing v8 as a substantial redesign. They do not prove that every part of the codebase was replaced.
What does the new pipeline model look like in code?
The conceptual shift is from building a policy and executing it to configuring a strategy, adding it to a pipeline, building that pipeline, and executing work through it. A simplified comparison illustrates the shape of the change:

// Polly v7-style shape
var policy = Policy
.Handle<Exception>()
.WaitAndRetry(/* retry configuration */);
policy.Execute(() => DoWork());
// Polly v8-style shape
var pipeline = new ResiliencePipelineBuilder()
.AddRetry(new RetryStrategyOptions
{
// Configure retry options for the version in use.
})
.Build();
pipeline.Execute(() => DoWork());
// For asynchronous work, use the pipeline's ExecuteAsync API.
This is a structural example, not a complete drop-in migration: the exact options and overloads depend on the Polly version and the operation being protected. The official migration guide provides the version-specific conversion details. In particular, do not translate an old policy mechanically without checking how its exception handling, context use, and execution flow map to v8.
Do you have to rewrite Polly v7 code?
No. The official migration guidance says the v7 API remains available through the Polly package. That makes it possible to upgrade the package first and convert policies gradually rather than replacing every policy in one release.

- Upgrade the
Pollypackage from 7.x to 8.x. Existing v7 policies can continue to run through the legacy API. - Convert policies incrementally. Replace selected v7 policy compositions with v8 strategies and pipelines, then test the migrated behavior.
- Switch the package reference after migration. Once legacy code has been converted, move the reference from
PollytoPolly.Core.
Migration has details beyond renaming types. The guide describes moving custom context use toward pooled ResilienceContext and its properties. It also notes that the AddRateLimiter extension requires the separate Polly.RateLimiting package.
What do Polly’s performance claims mean?
Polly describes low-allocation and zero-allocation APIs for advanced use cases, but those descriptions should not be read as a guarantee that every pipeline or application allocates nothing. Allocation behavior depends on the API used and the workload.

Microsoft’s .NET 8 article reports almost four times less memory for the particular standard HTTP resilience pipeline comparison it presents. That is a result for that comparison, not a universal benchmark for every Polly strategy, target framework, or application. The available evidence does not provide a full current benchmark dataset across those cases.
How does Polly v8 relate to Microsoft’s HTTP resilience packages?
Microsoft’s .NET 8 article describes Microsoft.Extensions.Http.Resilience as an HTTP-specific layer built on Polly v8 and as the successor to Microsoft.Extensions.Http.Polly. That article recommends it for new projects in its .NET 8 context; this is time-bounded guidance rather than a claim about the latest recommendation for every current .NET version.
The same article describes Microsoft.Extensions.Resilience as providing a minimal set of APIs and a resilience enricher for Polly metrics. It also presents a standard HTTP pipeline that combines five strategies in this order:
- Rate limiter
- Total request timeout
- Retry
- Circuit breaker
- Attempt timeout
This is Microsoft’s HTTP integration example, not a required pipeline order or default configuration for every application that uses Polly directly.
Is Polly 8.8.0 the latest version?
A NuGet listing reviewed for this article displayed Polly 8.8.0 and compatible target frameworks including .NET Standard 2.0 and .NET 6. That is a dated package-listing observation, not a guarantee that 8.8.0 remains the latest release. Check the current package listing before selecting a version or relying on a particular framework compatibility entry.
