Researchers have produced a directed beam of muonium—an electrically neutral, short-lived atom containing a muon—as a step toward testing how gravity acts on second-generation matter. The beam source is real; a measurement of muonium’s gravitational response is still planned. The result does not show that Einstein’s theory has failed or that a fifth force exists.

What is the “atomic cannon”?

It is a metaphor for a new muonium source, not a conventional cannon. In a paper published online in Nature Physics on 14 September 2026, researchers affiliated with ETH Zurich, the Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI), and Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz reported extracting muonium from superfluid helium to make a high-intensity, superthermal beam. The study

The source begins with antimuons produced at PSI. The team slows them in superfluid helium; when an antimuon encounters a free electron, they form muonium. The atom’s positive chemical potential helps drive it out of the liquid. At the helium surface, the emerging atoms form an upward-moving beam. Lead author Jesse Zhang described the mechanism this way: “So we’re using the chemical potential as an atomic cannon,” ETH Zurich reported.

Why use muonium to study gravity?

Muonium consists of a positive muon bound to an electron. It is electrically neutral, so stray electric and magnetic fields are less likely to overwhelm the comparatively weak gravitational effect than they would for a charged test particle. The muon is a second-generation particle: unlike the electron, it is unstable and decays after 2.2 microseconds, according to ETH Zurich’s 2026 report. That brief lifetime makes efficient production and rapid, controlled measurement essential.

The underlying question is whether gravity acts the same way on ordinary matter and on matter containing a second-generation particle. In the equivalence principle, inertial mass—the resistance to acceleration—and gravitational mass—the property that determines response to gravity—are equivalent. Measuring muonium’s fall would test that principle in a system not made solely of stable, first-generation matter.

What is different about this beam?

Earlier muonium sources produced atoms traveling in many directions and across a broad range of speeds. The reported source instead produces directed atoms with a narrower velocity distribution and superthermal speeds, as described in the PSI account. A more controlled stream is useful because an interferometer needs atoms with sufficiently predictable motion to make and interpret a gravity-sensitive interference pattern.

These are qualitative comparisons reported in the cited coverage; the available accounts do not establish numerical values for the beam’s intensity, speed, or velocity spread.

How could an interferometer test gravity?

The team is developing an atom interferometer for muonium. Atoms behave as waves, and an interferometer can split and recombine those waves. Gravity is expected to shift the resulting interference pattern. By measuring that displacement, researchers could estimate muonium’s gravitational response and compare it with the expected response under the equivalence principle.

ETH Zurich said in September 2026 that the researchers hoped to test the method with the beam during 2026, with the gravity experiment potentially following two or three years later. That was a reported plan, not confirmation that either milestone has since occurred or a guaranteed timetable.

Would a result challenge Einstein?

A measured difference between muonium and ordinary matter would be surprising and could point to physics beyond current expectations, potentially including a hypothetical fifth force. But the beam-generation paper reports a new source, not a gravity result. ETH’s report explicitly says a fifth force has not been proven.

For now, the significance is that researchers have a more controlled source with which to attempt a difficult test. Whether muonium falls just like ordinary matter remains an open experimental question.
