Ask your child’s school which devices, operating systems, browsers, accounts and learning platforms it supports before buying a laptop. There is no one laptop specification or online platform that suits every school. A Chromebook may be an option, but only if it works with the school’s required services.
Start with the school’s requirements
Contact the teacher, school or district and confirm what the child will need to join classes and complete activities. Schools may use different platforms and device policies, so general product recommendations cannot guarantee compatibility.
- Which device types and operating systems does the school support?
- Are there browser-version requirements or required apps?
- Does the child need a school account, and who will provide login details?
- Can the school lend a device or help with internet access?
- Does the child need accessibility features or other individualized support?
Ontario’s remote-learning policy names laptops and tablets as examples of devices and says school boards should provide devices and internet connectivity to students who otherwise lack access. That is an Ontario policy, not a universal requirement; ask about the rules and support available in your own school system. Ontario Policy/Program Memorandum 164.
Compare device types by compatibility, not by a generic spec list
The available guidance does not establish minimum processor, memory, storage, screen-size or battery requirements for kindergarten distance learning. Avoid buying to an assumed specification: the school’s platform and the child’s needs should determine the choice.

Choose among supported options based on the child’s required accessibility features, the ease of joining sessions and any device or technical support the school provides. The cited guidance does not rank particular laptop models.
Check accessibility and platform features
Ask the school which accommodations or assistive tools the child needs, then confirm that the device and platform support them. Zoom’s learning guide describes keyboard accessibility, screen-reader support and live transcription or captions; those are Zoom-specific features, not a guarantee that another platform offers the same options. Set up a comfortable place to learn
Use the platform’s current parent instructions to prepare for class, and arrange a quiet, well-lit space with a table and chair that suit the child. Keep the device near a reliable Wi-Fi access point when practical. Zoom specifically advises placing the device near the Wi-Fi router or access point; this is a Zoom setup recommendation, not a universal network guarantee. Zoom’s parent and student guide.

Keep screen use intentional and adult-supported
For children aged 2–5, UK Department for Education early-years guidance recommends limiting screen use and making it purposeful, with an adult co-engaging and checking that content is appropriate and safe. It says not to allow children to access or use screens alone or with other children without adult co-engagement. The advice is aimed at early-years settings in the UK; it is not a universal rule for every school schedule or household. UK Department for Education: Help for early years providers—Screen use.

Discuss class schedules, individual needs and assistive technology with the school and family rather than restricting a tool a child needs.
