At A$16.29 on 2 October 2026, Fortescue (ASX: FMG) looks inexpensive on its FY26 underlying earnings, but the case is less compelling if reported estimates for lower earnings over the next three years prove accurate. The price equates to about 9.8 times FY26 underlying EPS; applying it to the estimates reported by The Motley Fool Australia gives forward multiples rising to about 14.5 times by FY29. That makes FMG a possible cyclical value, not an obvious bargain. The dated price and earnings figures do not establish a fair value or a personal buy recommendation.

What does the share price imply about Fortescue’s earnings?

The A$16.29 reference price was reported for Friday 2 October 2026 by The Motley Fool Australia. It is a dated observation, not a live quote; Fortescue says its investor-centre price information comes from a third party and is delayed by 20 minutes. The reported price was slightly above the article’s stated 52-week low of A$16.13.

Trailing earnings: about 9.8 times

Fortescue’s FY26 results report underlying EPS of A$1.66. Dividing A$16.29 by A$1.66 gives an approximate trailing price-to-underlying-earnings ratio of 9.8. This is a calculation from the dated share price and company-reported EPS, not a valuation published by Fortescue.

The earnings measure matters. Fortescue reported underlying EPS of A$1.69 in FY25 and A$1.66 in FY26. The Motley Fool article gives A$1.71 for FY26, but the cited material does not reconcile that figure with the company’s official underlying EPS. The 9.8-times calculation here uses Fortescue’s stated underlying figure, not the article’s number.

Reported estimates: higher forward multiples

The same 2 October article reports consensus EPS estimates, but its cited passage does not identify the estimate provider or methodology. The following ratios hold the A$16.29 price constant and divide it by each reported estimate; they are arithmetic illustrations, not forecasts by Fortescue or target prices.

Earnings period EPS basis Implied P/E at A$16.29
FY26 A$1.66 underlying EPS, reported by Fortescue About 9.8x trailing
FY27 A$1.33 estimate reported by The Motley Fool Australia About 12.2x
FY28 A$1.21 estimate reported by The Motley Fool Australia About 13.5x
FY29 A$1.12 estimate reported by The Motley Fool Australia About 14.5x

The widening gap between trailing and estimated forward multiples is the central valuation question: the shares appear cheaper if FY26 earnings are a sound guide to future earnings, and less so if the reported decline in EPS materialises. The estimates are secondary-source figures, not company guidance, and should be treated as uncertain.

What supported FY26 earnings—and what made them less straightforward?

Fortescue shipped 201.3 million tonnes in FY26, achieving a Hematite realised price of US$91 per dry metric tonne. Hematite C1 unit cost was US$18.74 per wet metric tonne, 4% higher than FY25. Underlying EBITDA rose 9% to US$8.6 billion, with an underlying EBITDA margin of 51%.

Underlying and statutory results told different stories. Underlying NPAT rose 3% to US$3.5 billion, while statutory NPAT fell 15% to US$2.9 billion. Fortescue identified a US$525 million non-cash impairment related to Iron Bridge and a US$73 million compensation claim expense among the explanations. Investors comparing P/E ratios should avoid treating underlying and statutory earnings as interchangeable.

What does FY27 guidance say about the next year?

Fortescue’s FY27 guidance indicates shipments around the FY26 level, while its unit-cost range is higher than the FY26 result. The guidance assumes an AUD:USD exchange rate of 0.70.

Measure FY26 reported FY27 guidance
Shipments 201.3 million tonnes 197–207 million tonnes, including 11–14 million tonnes from Iron Bridge on a 100% basis
Hematite C1 unit cost US$18.74 per wet metric tonne US$20.50–US$21.75 per wet metric tonne

Shipment volume and unit cost do not determine earnings by themselves. Realised iron-ore prices, foreign exchange and operational execution also affect the result, so near-flat volume guidance is not a promise of stable EPS.

How strong is the balance sheet and cash generation?

At 30 June 2026, Fortescue reported US$6.8 billion of operating cash flow, US$3.2 billion of free cash flow, US$5.1 billion in cash and US$0.9 billion of net debt. Gross debt to EBITDA was 0.7 times. These year-end figures provide evidence of financial capacity, but they do not insulate earnings or the share price from a fall in iron-ore prices.

In the FY26 results announcement, Fortescue Metals and Operations CEO Dino Otranto said: “Our record operating performance this year underpinned a nine per cent increase in Underlying EBITDA and a 25 per cent increase in free cash flow.” He also noted the company invested US$3.6 billion across the business. Those are management’s characterisations of performance and investment, rather than an independent assessment of future returns.

Is the dividend part of the value case?

Fortescue declared A$1.08 per share in fully franked FY26 dividends, equal to 65% of underlying NPAT. Its stated payout policy is 50–80% of full-year underlying NPAT, so the distribution is linked to earnings rather than fixed at a guaranteed amount.

What could change the investment case?

Iron-ore exposure and earnings cyclicality

The low trailing multiple may reflect expectations that earnings will fall from FY26 levels. Fortescue’s operating guidance does not remove its exposure to realised iron-ore prices, so a current-year P/E can look low when a company is near a stronger point in its earnings cycle.

Costs and project execution

FY27 C1 cost guidance is above the FY26 reported cost, while the Iron Bridge impairment shows that major projects can result in accounting losses. Expansion and decarbonisation initiatives may create future value, but their returns are not established by the FY26 results. Fortescue Growth and Energy CEO Gus Pichot described iron ore as providing “strong foundations from which we can grow and diversify Fortescue for the future” in the FY26 results call transcript; this is management’s strategic view, not a guarantee that diversification will deliver returns.

What the available comparison can—and cannot—show

The Motley Fool article discusses BHP as a comparison and points to its copper exposure alongside iron ore. That observation alone is not enough to conclude that BHP is cheaper or better: a sound peer comparison would need comparable earnings periods and definitions, commodity mix, balance-sheet measures, dividend variability and project-delivery risks. The cited evidence does not establish those like-for-like values.

How to interpret the valuation

On the available figures, Fortescue’s A$16.29 reference price is low relative to FY26 underlying EPS, but reported estimates imply a materially higher multiple on declining future earnings. Whether that is attractive depends on an investor’s view of iron-ore earnings, costs and execution—not on the trailing P/E alone. The cited figures support a conditional valuation discussion, not a precise fair-value estimate.
