The Dodgers’ relaxed spring demeanor did not mean the pressure was absent. As they pursued a third consecutive World Series title in 2026, manager Dave Roberts described a familiar daily routine: work toward the long-term goal by focusing on the day in front of the team. By September 17, Los Angeles had clinched the NL West and was still chasing a top-two postseason seed.

What “relaxed” meant for the Dodgers

The word described the look of the club, not a measured level of stress. A brief report from TheScore described players joking before a game and Roberts wearing shorts at batting practice. Max Muncy, in a March 2026 FOX Sports search-result extract, said spring “feels, to me, almost a little more relaxed.” He linked that feeling to a more typical spring build-up after the Dodgers opened the 2024 season in Seoul and the 2025 season in Tokyo.

Those scenes and comments do not establish that players felt no pressure, or that they expected another championship. Roberts’s own explanation was more practical: keep the work and daily focus consistent while holding the longer objective in view.

Why a third straight title would be unusual

Los Angeles entered 2026 seeking a third consecutive World Series championship after winning in 2024 and 2025. MLB.com’s December 2025 historical account identified only two franchises with runs of at least three straight championships: the Yankees, in 1936–39, 1949–53 and 1998–2000, and the Athletics, in 1972–74. That history makes the Dodgers’ pursuit rare; it does not predict how the 2026 season will end.

Shohei Ohtani said in February that he did not think about the three-peat much, but hoped he could look back after retirement and say he had been on a team that won three championships in a row. “That would be very cool,” he said through a translator.

The baseball questions behind the pursuit

MLB.com’s December 2025 preview highlighted three areas to watch. They are questions about sustaining a contender, not proof that any particular weakness would decide the season.

Can the veteran lineup keep producing?

The preview raised the age of several regulars as a question, while noting that Los Angeles scored the second-most runs in the majors in 2025. The relevant tension is between the lineup’s demonstrated production and the uncertainty of asking an experienced group to keep delivering over another season.

Can the rotation stay healthy and handle its workload?

Multiple Dodgers starters spent time on the injured list in 2025, and the preview noted Yoshinobu Yamamoto’s workload alongside injury histories in the rotation. Those factors make durability worth watching, but they are not a forecast that a pitcher will be injured or that the rotation will falter.

Will Edwin Díaz settle the closer role?

The Dodgers signed Díaz before the 2026 season after Tanner Scott’s difficult first year with the club. MLB.com identified Díaz’s adaptation and the team’s recent efforts to address the closer position as questions to follow. The role depends on execution and availability, not just on the offseason signing.

How the late-season picture looked on September 17

In its September 17, 2026 report, the Associated Press said Los Angeles had clinched its fifth consecutive NL West title and 14th straight postseason appearance. That tied Atlanta’s record of 14 consecutive postseason appearances from 1991 through 2005. The Dodgers were 93–60 in that report and still pursuing a top-two seed; those are figures from that date, not current standings for October 3.

Roberts treated the division title as a step rather than a finish line. “We’re still trying to get one of those top two seeds,” he said after the clinch, adding that the team needed to fly out and play the Giants the next day. Mookie Betts put it similarly: “It’s step one. We’ve got a long way to go.”

The AP report also described several health concerns on September 17: Ohtani was on the injured list with right biceps inflammation, Roki Sasaki was recovering from a blister, Blake Snell had left a start with groin tightness, and Díaz was nearing activation after neck inflammation. Those are dated snapshots, not confirmed October 3 availability updates.

Routine and urgency can coexist

In February, Roberts said he expected the team to approach each day much as it had in recent seasons, and said the players were capable of doing that while keeping the long-term goal in mind. After the September clinch, he emphasized celebrating without letting it carry over into the next game. Together, those comments describe a routine-first approach—not indifference to the stakes.

The relaxed impression, then, belongs alongside the larger context: a historically rare target, a division title secured, a seed still to pursue in the September snapshot, and baseball questions about the lineup, rotation and closer. The team’s demeanor is a reported impression; the results on the field are what determine whether the three-peat happens.
