People born in Europe in 2025 are projected to experience an average of 3.2 more years of extreme fire-weather conditions over their lifetimes than people born in 1950—an 84% increase, according to a 2026 study in Environmental Research Letters. The result is a modelled comparison between generations, not a forecast for any one person. Extreme fire weather describes conditions that make fires more likely to start, spread, or resist suppression; it does not mean a wildfire will occur.
What the study measured
The peer-reviewed study, “Increasing lifetime exposure to extreme fire weather under climate change in Europe,” analysed projected lifetime exposure across Europe using an ensemble of bias-adjusted and downscaled global climate models. The authors also developed dem4cli, an open-source Python package for incorporating demographic data into climate-hazard assessments. The study was published in 2026 in Environmental Research Letters, volume 21, issue 18, article 184001 (DOI 10.1088/1748-9326/ae93de).
Here, exposure means time spent experiencing weather conditions conducive to fire. It is not a count of fires, burned area, smoke days, property losses, or years living through a continuous fire-weather episode. A lifetime total can accumulate across separate periods.
Why the 2025 and 1950 cohorts differ
The study estimates that the 2025 birth cohort in Europe will experience 3.2 additional lifetime years of extreme fire weather on average compared with the 1950 cohort—an 84% increase. The comparison reflects both changing climate conditions and different modeled lifetimes. The Energy Mix’s October 1, 2026 report on the study attributes 86% of the average difference to climate and 14% to longer lifetimes.

This is a cohort average, not a prediction that every person born in 2025 will encounter exactly 3.2 more years than a person born in 1950. Individual exposure depends on where someone lives and the conditions experienced over their lifetime.
How projections vary by European region and warming pathway
The Energy Mix reported regional lifetime-exposure ranges for people born in 2025 under two warming pathways. The figures are years of projected exposure; the report does not establish that these ranges are statistical confidence intervals or values that apply to each person in a region.

Across both scenarios, the reported ranges are generally higher in Southern Europe than in Northern Europe. They also show why a Europe-wide average cannot describe exposure equally well in every location.
The 2.6°C figure is the report’s framing of median expected end-of-century warming under current policies, not a guaranteed outcome. These are conditional scenario projections: they describe what the modeled exposure looks like under specified warming pathways.

What the warming pathways mean for exposure
As reported by The Energy Mix, the study authors estimate that limiting warming to 1.5°C rather than following the 2.6°C current-policy scenario would reduce projected lifetime exposure for the 2025 cohort by an average of 1.3 years. The result indicates that the amount of warming affects the projected burden; it does not imply that the lower-warming pathway eliminates fire-weather exposure or wildfire risk.
Portugal illustrates the potential scale of local differences. The study abstract projects that, under current policies, people born there in 2025 will experience nearly twice the lifetime exposure of those born in 1950. In the most exposed regions of northeastern Portugal, the projected amount reaches as much as 2.5 times the 1950-cohort exposure. The abstract also estimates that each additional degree of global warming by 2100 adds approximately 270 days of extreme fire-weather exposure over the lifetime of a person born in Portugal in 2025. These are projections specific to Portugal, not Europe-wide estimates.

What these projections do—and do not—say about wildfire risk
Extreme fire weather is associated with a greater likelihood of ignition and spread and with more difficult suppression. But conducive weather is not the same as a wildfire: fires also depend on ignition sources, fuels, terrain, land use, and response. Nor does the exposure measure estimate an individual’s chance of injury or property loss, the amount of land that will burn, or smoke exposure.
- It does show: a modeled difference in accumulated lifetime exposure between birth cohorts, and how that exposure changes across warming pathways and regions.
- It does not show: that each exposed person will experience a fire, that a particular location will burn, or that mitigation alone replaces local prevention and adaptation.
The study’s indexed abstract and The Energy Mix’s October 1, 2026 report support the findings described here. The final paper’s precise fire-weather threshold, detailed model configuration, and full uncertainty analysis are not established by those accessible summaries, so no more specific threshold or confidence range should be inferred from these figures.
