The Canadian dollar has been under pressure against the U.S. dollar, with stronger U.S. data and widening interest-rate differentials among the factors cited by the Federal Reserve Bank of New York. The Bank of Canada’s indicative rate put one U.S. dollar at C$1.4246 on October 2, 2026. That rate is a dated snapshot—not proof that interest rates alone caused the move or a forecast that the Canadian dollar will keep falling.
What the latest exchange rate shows
On October 2, 2026, the Bank of Canada’s daily indicative rate was USD/CAD 1.4246: one U.S. dollar was worth C$1.4246. Expressed in the opposite direction, CAD/USD was 0.7020, or about US$0.7020 per Canadian dollar. The Bank quotes foreign currencies in Canadian dollars and calculates indicative rates from averages of aggregated financial-institution quotes. They are not guaranteed rates for a purchase, transfer, or cash exchange. Bank of Canada daily exchange rates
USD/CAD is a bilateral rate: it compares the Canadian and U.S. dollars only. It does not by itself show how the Canadian dollar is doing against all of Canada’s trading partners. For that broader view, the Bank of Canada also describes a Canadian-dollar effective exchange-rate index, which weights the currency against major trading partners. Why relative U.S. interest rates can weigh on the Canadian dollar
When investors can earn relatively more on U.S.-dollar assets, demand for those assets may rise. Buying them can increase demand for U.S. dollars and put downward pressure on the Canadian dollar relative to its U.S. counterpart. A Bank of Canada staff analytical note describes this relationship as a mechanism: a wedge between Canadian and U.S. interest rates tends to lower the Canadian dollar’s current value while raising expected appreciation. Exchange-rate adjustment can help balance expected returns across currencies. Bank of Canada staff analytical note

This is not a complete explanation of any particular exchange-rate move. The note is staff analysis, and it says its authors’ views may differ from the Bank of Canada’s official views. Interest rates are one influence among many; the note does not establish that the rate relationship alone caused the recent Canadian-dollar weakness.
What officials reported about the second quarter of 2026
In a quarterly report published August 13, 2026, the Federal Reserve Bank of New York said the U.S. dollar appreciated against advanced-economy currencies, including the Canadian dollar, during Q2 2026. It reported that market attention later in the quarter shifted toward widening U.S.–advanced-economy interest-rate differentials in the United States’ favor. The report connected that shift with stronger-than-expected U.S. economic data and an upward repricing of Federal Reserve policy expectations. Federal Reserve Bank of New York, Q2 2026 report

The account is about a particular quarter and a set of currencies, not a claim that the U.S. dollar rose against every currency. The same report says the dollar depreciated against the Chinese renminbi and some high-yielding emerging-market currencies. It also does not quantify how much of the Canadian-dollar move came from the yield differential rather than other forces.
Policy rates are not the same as a market yield gap
Two dated policy-rate observations provide context, but they are not a matched-maturity comparison of market yields:

The observations use different dates and different policy-rate measures. Subtracting them would not produce a definitive current market yield spread. Market yields—such as bond yields at a particular maturity—are a separate comparison and can change as investors revise expectations.
What this means if you are exchanging money
The indicative rate is useful for understanding the currency relationship on a given date, but it is not necessarily the rate a customer receives. A bank, card issuer, money-transfer service, or exchange counter may apply its own rate and fees. Check the provider’s actual quote for the amount and transaction you plan to make rather than treating the Bank of Canada figure as an executable offer. Does this mean the Canadian dollar will keep falling?
No reliable forecast follows from the cited evidence alone. The New York Fed’s account supports the view that relative-rate expectations and stronger U.S. data were relevant to U.S.-dollar appreciation against the Canadian dollar in Q2 2026. It does not establish that the yield gap will persist, quantify its future effect, or show that it will outweigh other influences on the exchange rate.
