Evan Bouchard opened Edmonton’s 2026–27 season with five points, then added three more in the Oilers’ second game. The outburst set two distinct NHL records for defensemen: five points in a season opener and eight points through a team’s first two games.
What record did Evan Bouchard set?
Bouchard set two records, each measured over a different span. In Edmonton’s September 30, 2026 season opener, he became the first defenseman to record five points in an NHL season opener, according to the Oilers’ account. After his next game on October 1, he had eight points through the Oilers’ first two games—a defenseman record reported by Sportsnet.
| Record window | Bouchard | Previous or higher mark |
|---|---|---|
| One season opener | 5 points (3 goals, 2 assists) | Kevin Stevens had 6 points in Pittsburgh’s 1990 opener, a higher total by any player cited in the Oilers’ report. |
| Team’s first two games | 8 points (4 goals, 4 assists) | Harry Cameron had 7 points for the Toronto Arenas in 1917, according to Sportsnet. |
How Bouchard’s record-setting opener unfolded
On September 30, Bouchard scored a hat trick and added two assists against Vancouver. Edmonton lost 6–5 in overtime, so the individual milestone came in a defeat. Bouchard called it “One of those nights,” and credited teammates screening in front: “Without those guys in front, none of them were going in,” the Oilers reported.
The five-point total established the season-opener record specifically for defensemen; it was not the NHL’s all-player record. Kevin Stevens recorded six points for Pittsburgh in its October 5, 1990 opener, the higher season-opening total noted by Edmonton. Bouchard’s hat trick also was the third by a defenseman on Opening Night, after Mark Howe in 1980 and Bert Cobeau in 1919, according to the Oilers.

What happened in the second game?
In the October 1 rematch, Bouchard added a goal and two assists before the second period ended. Those three points brought his total for Edmonton’s first two games to eight: four goals and four assists. Sportsnet said that surpassed the previous defenseman mark of seven, credited to Harry Cameron of the Toronto Arenas in 1917.
What teammates said about his play
In an October 1 NHL.com report, Oilers forward Leon Draisaitl praised Bouchard’s play at both ends of the ice, saying, “He’s special on both sides, and that part a lot of people don’t see.” Captain Connor McDavid pointed to details that can be less visible, saying Bouchard “makes 1,000 great plays” while people may focus on his mistakes. Those are teammates’ assessments, not a separate statistical measure of defensive performance.
